Hang

hang The “hang” (pronounced “hung”) is a (relatively) new musical instrument that sounds like a hybrid steel drum and gamelan (a Thai xylophone). It is played with the hands or mallets (or whatever) on the lap or a stand and is tuned to make a variety of sounds depending on where it is hit. Hang means “hand” in the Bernese language.

It is made by a swiss company Panart but their web site is now down and they are only making a limited number of instruments duing part of the year. This is an exciting instrument so there should be a used market for it.

If you read down this rather long thread you’ll see that you can purchase a new hang by making an appointment with Hanghouse, traveling to Switzerland and… well, read the comments for more on this.

I have a hang drum and I can tell you I am in love with it. It is an amazing drum, and I use a lot of my tabla finger technique on it and am learning how to get more and more sounds out of it. If you can aford it, you will not regret getting one. So call Ron Kravitz at 215-233-0777 or go to http://www.musicinthemoment.com or e-mail him at: musicinthemoment@earthlink.net.

Scott: The question is, which one to get? There are so many choices and it’s not easy to compare them at the site. What kind do you have and do you play it with other instruments, like drums?

  7. on 23 Aug 2005 at 8:22 PMScott Davidson

Richard-You are correct, it is difficult to choose which scale to get. The Hang Drum I have now was chosen for me by Ron, and it is the Japanese scale: Banshiki-Cho/Yue-Diao scale, which it turns out I like and other musicians also have no trouble playing with. I would like to get another one, and I admit I agonize over which scale to get. I am leaning toward a Dorian scale. It will be awile before I can afford to get another anyway, so maybe by next year I will decide.
Right now I am having fun using it with my Roland loop station with it. -Scott

Scott: thanks for the report. One of these days I’m gonna get one of those things as they’re quite amazing.

  9. on 15 Mar 2006 at 11:51 PMMarga

I have one (Dorian) and I love it. I have just discovered that marimba mallets coax the sweetest tones out of it..

I just yesterday recieved email from Ron Kravitz that the makers have decided not to distribute these worldwide. Meaning, they have become much rarer all the sudden.

You’d have to pry mine out of my cold dead hands…

    Peace all,
    m

  10. on 16 Mar 2006 at 7:54 AMRichard

Marga: Darn, I was hoping to get one someday and I too like the sound of them with mallets; the time I borrowed David Darling’s hang I played it with my hands and with various mallets and the mallets were easier to aim at the sweetest spots (for me).

I had the hardest time figuring out which model I wanted and that gave me pause a few years ago. Each one is great in its own way but it’s hard to imagine how they might work with other instruments (for me).

  11. on 16 Mar 2006 at 7:44 PMMarga

Yep, I know of which you speak. All those scales and tunings to choose from, make for a very tough choice.

I think the Dorian was the first in the list on Ron’s hang shop site. I always felt a bit bourgouise picking the first one.. But, dorian is where its at, baby. Plain and simple.

How about a chromatic instrument - I would wager an eliptical or rectangular drum would sound OK , or better. Not as pretty but no modal lockage.

May the Gu be with you,
    Mark of Austin.

what a feeling it is to be a hang owner and player….i have worked hard over the last few months to explore the range of tones that i can get from my yu diao high hang. it amazes everyone i play it to..i teach music and art workshops and playing this is an amazing ice breaker.

words of warning………if you dent your hang its a complete disaster and tears will follow! theres nothing worse than a bum note!

It sounds too perfect. In understanding the recent rareness of these heavenly instruments, I would like to go to the source. Where in Switzerland do I go? Somebody, anybody, please!! Guide me to one of these so that I may then guide those beutiful, spine tingling, toe popping sounds out of the hang. The hang NEEDS me.

    Hi,

last night, I heard the hang for the first time. Was very inspired to put voice to it. After a little tweaking and figuring out compatible keys, was able to play along with the hang on my guitar. We even got wild on some old Bonnie Raitt and Scissor Sisters. Such a sweet instrument.

I just purchased the LLAMA CD by Ravid Goldschmidt and Sílvia Pérez Cruz. Just incredible! Ravid uses the Pentatonic and Aeolian Hangs, which really does not mean anything to me. I also see that there are Japanese tuning Hangs.
I am not a musician, but I recently became semi-retired and after hearing this instrument I want to learn it very, very badly. I would like to purchase one and any leads, suggestions, tips, lessons, advices will be much appreciated.
Do you think that not being a musician learning instrument like Hang is not wise?

  33. on 22 Jul 2006 at 8:01 PMBonnie

    Dear Richard,
Am SO happy to find your blog!! And am not really surprised to find there are so many others out there who, like myself, heard this amazing instrument and fell in love. My first affair began when I heard the hang played at a sound workshop in Cape Town, South Africa. I immediately knew I HAD to have one of these instruments. I am a singer, song-writer who is trying desperately to learn the piano to help with my writing and to accompany myself. When I heard this instrument I, like a previous blogger, thought to myself, “I can learn to play this…..I can write with this instrument” but, before I had this thought, I heard a melody insinuating itself through my mind…..it felt like it had been ‘waiting’ to meet again its beloved partner, the hang in order to express itself. All I wanted to do was sing out along with the hang musician, but it wasn’t appropriate to do so. I’ve never had an experience quite like it…. and I haven’t been able to get it out of my mind. I have been searching for a hang ever since. Kai,,,,,or anyone else…..if you know how I can get my hands on one I will be forever grateful…….bonnie in Toronto, ONTARIO…bonnieblack1@hotmail.com

    Thaddeus:

“Do you think that not being a musician learning instrument like Hang is not wise?”

On the contrary, the HANG is incredibly accessible as an instrument and I’m sure you’d love playing it. Finding one may be difficult though as they’re not made anymore and my guess is the used market is tight. Until then, know that a steel drum or even a log drum or small marimba might suffice. What you’re looking for is a percussion instrument that will play a range of tones that you find appealing. Good luck.

Bonnie and Andy: I don’t even have one myself (although I have access to one) but somehow this post has ended up in google I’ve become a clearing house for things hang. Glad to do it and if people want to use this thread to advertise, fine by me. I think, because they’re not made anymore they’re in short supply.

Thank you for the Hang advice for a novice. I contacted Ron Kravitz and he gave me run down on the current status.

Thaddeus: wow, new ones are coming? Great. I had no idea. Please keep us informed here as I’d like to buy one.

While we are waiting, can anyone reading this list help me? I was all set to buy one many times but could not decide which model to choose from. They all sound interesting to me and in isolation or even borrowing and playing many of Ron’s (I’ve met him numerous times) I could not decide and given that it’s an expensive instrument, I waited. Well, I guess I waited too long.

I play many kinds of hand drums and would want to work the hang into my drumming. Can anyone make a recommendation on how to start thinking about tone range? Thanks.

    Dear Hang lovers,

I just returned from Bern, Switserland were I visited the Hang house and ofcourse the wonderful Felix and Sabina. Yes there is a 2nd generation of instruments now. If you want one just go there knock at the door of the hanghouse and you’ll be received warmly. No more sending around the world or hassle just go the there and get what is there. in May 2007 there will be an other Hang meeting (most probably) just like this year (there were over 100 Hang players showing up from so many countries). as there are around 3.500 Hangs distributed over the world (of which I and my 2 brothers own 26) there are many players around. Also there must be Hangs around from the 1st generation that are collecting dust so keep hunting and try to play these wonderful instruments.
Well if you want to hear some Hang music go to http://www.soundclick.com/musicforhang. just register (free) and listen and or download all you want. Hang solo, duo, with vocals with band, with orchestra and more. ENJOY

    Joshua

    Hi Richard,

I bought a Hang right before they stopped making them about 8 or 9 months ago. Like yourself, I did a lot of agonizing over which scale to order. I wanted the most versatile drum I could get. They are WAY too expensive to be limited to one key or tonal center. I actually made drawings of the few different scales I was considering and after examining the possibilities of each I ordered a C Dorian drum. The dum or center note is G and the ascending scale is C D Eb F G A Bb c. This is a wonderfully versatile drum. I can play in C dorian or C minor pentatonic, but can also play on G minor, D minor, F major and Eb major and also in a tuning I love which is based on the donso ngoni C D F G Bb c, though this one handcuffs me on the drum. So I can definitely recommend a dorian drum if you are thinking you can only buy one. I would like to have a pentatonic drum for the broader range but I have several pentatonic instruments and they are not nearly as versatile.

Anyway, after all that, I do have to say that I’m not totally sold on the Hang and have thought of EBaying mine several times. Especially now that they are scarce and I might actually get a decent price for it. I love how it sounds, but it seems like a bit of an ergonomic nightmare to me. Reaching out to get the notes farthest from you is not at all comfortable and my back kills me after a half hour of playing. Watch someone play a steel pan: they work one tenth as hard and have many more notes much closer together. Mine also has a bit of an overring in one of the notes and depending on how it’s hit it goes from not noticable to fairly annoying. I’m really picky when it comes to instruments so to hit a note and hear that note with shades of the neighboring note mixed in is not something I expected or was pleased with. I contacted the makers but really didn’t get very far. In fairness, I’ve lent this drum to several percussionists and they said it didn’t bother them at all.

I have never had an instrument like this before. One day I play it and am convinced I’ll never have anything to say on it and want to sell it. The next day you couldn’t pry it out of my hands for anything. Weird. I usually either love or hate or am indifferent to an instrument and feel the same everytime I pick it up. But the Hang is more like a woman. : ) I don’t think I’ll ever figure it out!

Best of luck to you and to the others who have posted and are searching for drums. If you catch me on one of those off days maybe you can have mine. If anyone would like to email me offlist: Tarktunes1@comcast.net.

    Peace,
    Tark

  43. on 31 Jul 2006 at 11:11 AMRichard

Tark: thanks so much for sharing your experience. Nice to hear from someone not totally stoked on it or, with a love/hate relationship with it.

Believe it or not, and this may be totally sacrilegious in the hang world, I moved from playing it by hand to playing it with both soft and medium mallets and I felt the sound I got was cleaner and it was a heck of a lot easier to play. One needs some kind of tripod conga stand to do this easily but it can also be done on the floor or lap.

I still don’t have one but I go over and play my good friend David Darling’s if I need a fix. I can’t remember which model he has; I think it’s a pentatonic scale although I don’t really know.

Joshua: Does this mean that the only way to get one of these things is to go to Bern? That would make the hang out of my reach, even though I’d love to go there.

    Hi Richard,

I have tried mallets on the hang but was nervous because I’d heard you could knock it out of tune if you played too hard. Perhaps I’ll seek out some soft ones and give them a try. Thanks to Erce, one of the pics he posted showed me a way to hold the hang on my legs that was different from how I had been playing it. This seems to be a bit easier on my back and the far notes seem closer. Hope I’m able to play longer and more comfortably this way. David’s album Cycles has long been a favorite of mine. I wore out my vinyl copy and had to get it on cd. I hope he is doing well.

I’m glad that the Hangsters are still making drums, they really are far-out instruments and I’m glad I ordered mine when I did. I’ve played it a bunch the last few days and found some very cool patterns emerging. Drool city. My wife swears it’s the coolest instrument I have and that’s saying a lot because I have a LOT of instruments! Wish I could fit it in my kayak or backpack. I guess that’s why god made kalimbas. Take care and best of luck to all the hangers and people searching for drums.

    Peace,
    Tark

Did a search on hang and found my way here. I bought a penta C 3 years ago from then American Distrib. Ron Kravitz. Alas, as you all now know Felix and Sabina pulled all their world distribution. They were simply overwhelmed with the demand for their wonderful creation. They took a few months off to get re-energized and make decisions about the future direction of the hang. They decided to concentrate on four basic tunings in their new generation hang, all with a D dum note up top. Those who have the new hangs say that they are more responsive than the 1st generation hang, with a brighter sound. I must count myself as very fortunate. In addition to my penta C which I love, I have another hang( DADEFABbD) on the way from Switzerland. I had entered into a dialogue with Felix prior to the pulling of his world distribution and so I got in under the wire. My new hang is due to arrive August 10. I hope to one day make a recording of Native American flute and melodic percussion that features my two hangs, tongue drum, Freenotes, udu and kalimba. The hang is truly a magical instrument. May you all find one in your lap in the future. Do not give up. It’s worth the wait, the money and the frustration. You can contact Felix and Sabina at tel/fax +41 031 301 33 32. Their snail mail address is PANArt Hangbau, Engehaldenstr. 131, Berne, Switzerland

Roberta Ann could you please email me at Tarktunes1@comcast.net.
I live in South Jersey and would like to talk to you about your interest in the Hang. Thanks.

    Hi Joseph,
I learnt that PANArt (Hang society’creator) stopped the distribution of Hang throught the world. The only way now is to make the ‘pilgrimage’ to Bern in Switzerland or find an occasion…

    good luck.

Hi. This weekend I performed at the MiniCHILL England [BATALA samba reggae] - the weekend was fantastic and musical however on Saturday night I heard in the near tents a soft whispering sound of an instrument that i couldn’t quite put my ear to. The next day I asked around and discovered it was a fellow drummer in my band. I was told the exciting story of their visit to Switzerland and how they purchased there hang. I spent the next few hours playing about with it and simply fell in love. Later that day a presentation was given to the organiser of the mini Chill festival [Brazilian abc charity for children who live on the streets] and I was gob smacked to find the organiser being handed a new hang…wow never to see one before to then see two in one day…fantastic and yes i will be making that trip to !!!! Many thanks Richard

Further to my last i’m finding it hard to locate the company in Bern - does any one have the details and how to contact them ? Many thanks Richard

  67. on 05 Sep 2006 at 7:54 AMRichard

Richard, I thought the company was mentioned earlier in this comment thread. If memory serves they’re not shipping anymore, one has to actually go pick an instrument up in Bern. Gad. If/when you find all info if you could kindly let us know here and I’ll add it to the original post so people won’t have to scan the thread. Thanks Richard and good luck getting one. Let us know which model you played and which one you want and/or get.

According to the email from PanArt, Hangs are only being custom-made, and you have to go to Switzerland to get a new one. You arrange for an appointment to discuss what you want. Then they build them and you can try them out there as well. The current cost is 600 Euros for the instrument with an extra 60 Euros for a “Swiss-made” bag. In Canadian funds this is $850 and $85, and in American Dollars about $765 and $76.50. The cost doesn’t sound that bad, but touring in Switzerland is not cheap.

After reading the email below, it almost seems like a pilgrimage. Considering the type of music that can be evoked from the Hang, maybe it is appropriate.

    Email:

Welcome to Hangbauhaus in Bern, Switzerland

After 5 years of experience with the Hang and its music, the Hangmakers
are no longer working with various standard models, but are creating
their own instruments. These creations are based on our knowledge of
the acoustical properties of the resonance body, our studies of scales
and our musical experience. Each Hang is a unique work of art. We don`t
    ship them.

    Hangbauhaus

In Hangbauhaus, PANArt`s new workshop space, Sabina Schärer and Felix
Rohner, the two Hangmakers, create their Hang instruments. After the
treatment of the raw material and tuning, the hanghang are brought
down to the Hanghaus, by the riverside.
The Hang tuning is based on D2 (GU-side, Bass), when played on the lab,
D3 (DING, central note) A3, D4, A4 in the outer tonal ring. The other 4
notes are tuned in artistic freedom, creating a bipolar scale.
    Example: D2, D3, A3 B3 C4 D4 E4 G4 A4
The GU side is tuned in D to a Ghatam-like sound

    Hanghaus

In this old wooden building, where the Hang was born in January of
2000, our guests can play the instruments in a quiet atmosphere. If you
would like to spend a night at the Hanghaus, there is a guestroom with
    a kitchen.

    Bern

Major train routes, including the TGV, the Euro-City and the Cisalpino
pass through Bern several times a day. Hanghaus sits on the bank of the
river Aare, 20 minutes walk from the main station. Bern is also
reachable by road from all directions.

Hang, signed and numbered including protective shell
    Euros 600.- / USD 750.-/ CHF 900.-
    (incl. VAT)

    Bag (swiss made) Euros 60.- / USD 75.-/ CHF 90.- (incl.VAT)

Are you interested in purchasing a Hang?

Please call us and we can fix a date to meet. If you like, we can
reserve the guest space for you. Details can be discussed by phone or

Oh my, getting one of these is like going to Mecca. Given this thread, maybe it is exactly like that. The cost of the instrument will be a fraction of the total cost of the trip, at least for us cowboys in the US. I mean, I’d love to get over there but there’s something rather combersom about this process, or so it seems to me. Thanks for posting this Richard. Are you going?

I am selling a car on e-bay and if it goes then yes i’m going. If i do go i will write about the trip, as for bringing back more than one drum i will have a chat with the makers and see what they say….speak soon. Richard

  72. on 06 Sep 2006 at 5:14 PMRichard

Richard: how will you decide on what drum to get once you’re there? I’m not sure I fully understand the process. If I get it right, it would preclude you bringing back any drums for anyone else, right? Thanks for considering posting a report once you’re back.

I have a HANG with the original carryingcase for sale here in Oslo Norway.

I ask for the original price of €600 pluss €60 for the case. It is only a year old and in perfect condition.

After a busy summer, with lots of visitors from all over the world, we are closing our doors for our yearly spell of Research and Development. During this time we will be looking at new ways of working with the metal and its music.

Hanghaus will remain closed to the public throughout the winter. During this period we will not be receiving visitors or selling instruments.

Please contact us in April of 2007, at which time we hope to be in a position to show you the results of our winter’s work.

  76. […] The long and the short of it is that hang drums will not be available again until next April, and then it can only be purchased in person, which means a trip to Bern, Switzerland. More details can be found among the more recent comments to this blog post. There is a comment at the bottom, dated today, from the creators of the Hang: After a busy summer, with lots of visitors from all over the world, we are closing our doors for our yearly spell of Research and Development. Do let us know how your plans materialize; maybe we can use this forum to organize a group going over to make things a bit easier for each of us. Not sure how many they’d want to see at one time over there but we could always ask.

    hello everyone,

    what an amazing summer!!!!!!!!!!!!

it started in May when i made the pilgrimage to the hang festival.

i had my yue diao re-tuned by sabina (wow what a woman! what an experience!)

i spent 4 days there. the atmosphere was amazing! hang sounds ringing through the trees 24 hours a day!

felix and sabina are not human! i am almost sure of it….lol (superhuman maybe? angels i think!?)

i just had to buy more hanghang (thats what more than one is called)!

now i regularly perform and record with my yue diao in F and my 2 new generation hanghang (no. 65 in Eb and no. 128 in D)

i really would buy a room full if i could afford it! its a good job they are so hard to get or i would be bankrupt!

a word of warning….DO NOT play too hard on your hang…its a horrible feeling when the notes lose their integrity…..oops i did it again guys….i played a drum and bass set in a nightclub recently and i have totally screwed my no.128! (the central bass note is temporarily ruined) looks like i will be taking it back to sabina for a re-tune next year!

i have almost finished my album of hang music, too….hear some on
    http://www.hang-music.com and launch the hangbox

    bye for now

Michael, wow, thanks for the link, the sounds, the works. Great site and I love your enthusiasm.

Can you be a bit more specific so us drummers who are considering hangs can know what’s too hard? No mallets? Hands only? How are you determining that your hangs are out of tune? Can you hear it happening over time or is it just one incident of playing too hard.

    Again, thanks.

  85. on 16 Sep 2006 at 1:21 PMin2nation

    hello again…..ok here goes

    too hard?!

the central note on the dome or ‘ding’ side is prone to losing its brilliance if repeatedly whacked.

yes i can hear the tone of the central note deteriorate over time until that point where i start to play it and have to ‘dampen’ the bass everytime.

i may have to give it a little bash from the inside with a hammer!
mallets are really a no no…its called ‘hang’ which means ‘hand’ in bernese.

if you find it difficult to get the clean loud tones with your fingers (as lots of people do at first) then try felt headed xylophone beaters with flexible shafts.

but the hardcore hang players would frown a little i think!

saying that, there are no rules to playing-

when i was in switzerland i saw someone playing one with a bow!

i also learned a new trick! spinning it on my thumb whilst playing with the other hand in a ufo stylee

see this page for my low fi videos

    http://www.myspace.com/in2nationworkshops

or search hang drum on youtube there are a few videos there.

    speak soon

I am new to the sound of the Hang. I’ve mostly played djembes and congas but have now discovered this amazing instrument. It appears that the hang is not going to be available and I’m sure those that have them in their posession will most likely hold onto them but if for some reason anyone is selling one I would be most interested. Thanks to those who have created some amazing tunes and posted them for the benefit of others.

    Hi,

Sorry to post on this board but it seems many people are after a hang and I have one for sale.

I am selling a Hang which was recently bought from PanArt in Berne. It is in London, UK but may be able to post worldwide provided the buyer picks up the tab - which could be costly. According the the owner this was one of the last to be sold before Feloix at PanArt shut-up shop for the next 6 months! Yes - you cannot even make the Pilgrimage to Berne to buy one at the moment which makes an already rare instrument even rarer!

The item is being auctioned on Ebay at the moment - I do not have that much knowledge of music and am selling it on behalf of the owner. Please contact me with any questions at info@ywks.org or visit the auction to place a bid at

Hey there, I would like to know the adress of the hanghaus, in bern, it doesn’t seem to be anywhere on this page. I heard the hang for the first time ever in amsterdam, and after listening like in a trance for about 10 minutes, I started crying and almost fainted!!! This is definetely the most amazing instrument I’ve ever heard, and I know that I have to have one (and also figured out that the one I want should be Ake Bono… very special!)

But please do write me, I’m waiting!!! :D

The hang was in its protective case with the shell on and about ten FRAGILE stickers on it. The guilty airline is BMI.

I sent the instrument to Bern to get fixed, following Sabina Schaerer’s concise but impeccable suggestions. It was sent back to me in Rome a week later, the french post took longer than expected. It was sent back via TNT, a private courier, which cost about 150 Euros (the french post cost less than 40 Euros but took ten days). Sabina’s comment was that they must have been particularly negligent with it, given the state of it when it arrived.

When TNT delivered it to me in Rome, Customs rang me up to say that they had a package for me but that I would have to pay 1200 Euros to take it out of customs. I ignored them, supposing that they were wanting me to pay customs duty on the hang, which was already in my hands.

The Hanghaus shipped the drum back to me overnight. I didnt even take it out of the box, I am now back in Guatemala, safely at home with a hang that works and sounds lovely.

The expense in this matter has been the postage, and every time I get on a plane and they dont let me take it with me onboard I have a terrible trip. Travelling in or out of London with the drum is difficult, as you are only allowed one piece of luggage on board, and the drum in the box exceeds the size specifications. I didnt dare take it out of the box.

Moral to the story: travel on foot, or leave it behind. This is a very fragile instrument and a huge attention sponge and stress generator.

Thank you to all who commiserated. I should also take this opportunity to recommend Sabina’s excellent handling of a difficult situation. I hope some day the folks in Bern train others to tune their drums.

    Best,

    Tony

Aahhhh, the plight of the searchers of the Hang. I too heard the instrument recently…. about a month ago. Became entranced with it as so many have, and began my quest. After exhaustive research online, I came to the conclusion that one was not to be had. On a whim, I emailed Ron Kravitz at music in the moment with the stereotypical story of hearing, wanting, and needing a Hang. Amazingly, he phoned me within a couple hours. He shared the story of the the elusive Hang with me and placed me on a waiting “alternate” list. (Not even in line to buy a possible 30 that had been ordered and spoken for). At that point I resolved myself to the fact that I would not see a Hang or even own one for a very long time. Living in the U.S. makes this instrument harder to acquire than the Lost Ark of the Covenant! However, a week later Ron called again. He was leaving in a day or so and had ONE Hang available!!! Could this be possible? Within a couple weeks of discovering this instrument, and it’s loyal followers, I might actually be in possession of one?!?!? Fate dealt me a VERY lucky hand. I’ve heard tales of the Hang finding it’s owner. And now I am a believer. Hopefully within a week or so, my Hang will find me. It is my theory that things DO happen for a reason. (Even if it sounds SO cliche!) Though I suspect that those that have not found their Hang ( or vice-versa) would strongly disagree. For me, I guess you could say that this is somewhat of a spiritual quest. I’m not looking to add to my repertoire with th addition of another exotic instrument. I don’t want to be the only one on my block with bragging rights because I own one either. Something inside of me NEEDS this instrument. Almost as if I am a foreigner in a strange land that all of a sudden has the ability to communicate everything that’s been waiting inside of me to be heard. I can hear the rythms in my head…. FEEL them. I find myself constantly tapping out patterns, like my fingers are warming up for something they’ve been meant to do since I was born. A little over dramatic perhaps? Well, I’m really trying to convey this inner vibration that I am experiencing. On another blog, someone surmised that the Earth resonates in the key of “D”. From what I understand, the new-gen Hangs are all tuned in D as well. Coincidence? Or “was it meant to be”? I think that I’ve rambled on for a little too long now. Good luck to those that are searching, and to those that are already fortunate enough to own/ play one, I can’t wait to play music with you all!

    Peace & Namaste!

    -Danny

  111. on 18 Nov 2006 at 8:27 AMRichard

Danny: which model did you get? Did you ask Ron for a particular model or just take what he had? How did you determine the model? Did you hear that particular model someplace? Congrats on your new instrument.

  112. on 18 Nov 2006 at 12:24 PMSaggio

Danny, you might want to consider attending the annual hang gathering in Bern, Switzerland in May, hosted by hang makers Felix and Sabina. Ron Kravitz provided my first hang 3 1/2 years ago. I now have 3 that I love, including two new generation hangs. Like you I am enamoured with the sound of hang and love to share it with everyone. Just returned from The International Sound Healers Conference in Santa Fe where I introduced the magic of the hang to several hundred sound healers. They were mesmerized, of course. And now many have embarked on their own hang journey. Make a joyful noise!

    Richard,

I was presented with the opportunity rather quickly. I asked about tuning as well, but Ron said he really wouldn’t know too much until he got there. I’m kinda hoping for a yue diao, though i’m not too familiar with the different intonations. From what I’ve read the yue diao is pretty easy to play with other instruments. The pentatonics are a little tricker from what I understand. I believe the new-gens are tuned with a high D and a low D (notes in between) But I think that the nature of the instrument itself makes it pretty versatile once you get the hang of it. pardon the pun. Soooo, at this point I’ll be happy with just about anything. My Hang found me. I accept it with whatever voice it decides to sing with. Part of the spiritual thing about it I guess. Letting the universe decide for me. At this point I am not a Hang musician as I haven’t even had the opportunity to play it yet. I’m just drawing on this energy that I’ve gotten just from seeing video and hearing audio. I can’t wait to feel the metal ringing under my hands. Until then, I am only an enthusiast.

    Peace, Namaste & HAppy Hangin’

    Saggio,

Absolutely beautiful what you’re doing. Healing seems so natural. What’s your thoughts on the Earth resonating in “D” and the Hang? From what I understand, the new-gens are also mostly D. Another synchronicity provided by the univers…. ;-).

Danny, the earth may indeed resonate in the note of D. And the Universe, I’ve read, hums along in the note of B flat. The Great Pyramid in Egypt sounds a crystal clear F# on instrumentation. No one note is better than any other or more significant. All sound is the vibration of Life and has its place in the music of the spheres. Our role is not to revere one sound over another but to make ourselves a hollow bone for the complete harmony of sound and to live soundly in concert with all that is, remembering the Truth of Being. The new generation hangs are truly magical. Enjoy!

    Saggio,

So true. Your philosophy reflects somewhat how I accept things around me. For instance… when you ask people what kind of music they enjoy, most will pigeonhole themselves into a genre or 2, citing great examples of which they speak. Myself, I enjoy ALL music. Be it classical chinese, jazz, Kabuki theatre, Bollywood musicals, folk, etc. etc. All music reflects a vibration within us all. Musicians have the talent of being able to channel this and that allows the layman to enjoy and understand those particular vibrations. I am all about choice and preference, but too many times people don’t look beyond what is familiar. To dig into the roots of what they are hearing. As societies “modernize” we become beings that can only handle “samples” of things. Generality has become our nemesis. We are now too lazy to seek out and learn more. Pre-packaged and concise are convenient for our fast paced lives. I could continue on a whole diatribe about how modern societies are losing their roots because of just such sociological behavior. I digress. Basic jist, I try to take in all around me…. absorb it somewhat, everything…. small, large. I guess this would be my “Truth of Being”. The Hang is the first thing I’ve found in a long time that has such a universal and wide appeal. I think this quality is what makes it special for me. Only days away from my first. Magic yet to come!

    Peace!

My wife was on Ron’s list and last friday we took a trip and picked out her Hang! They all sounded real nice, and it was cool to see a room full of Hang Drums. She couldn’t be happier! She is busy recording and writing music and playing it all over town! Thanks Ron!!

So if you want a Hang - get on Ron’s list.

    Hi there,

So, from reading everyone’s blog… it would seem that the best way to go about getting a Hang is through Ron from musicinthemoment.com ?.. Is anyone aware of what the approximate cost and waiting period are? By the way, Danny, amazing story… An exquisite way to experience the beauty of your spirit.. ;) .. All the best..
Again, if anyone has any info, on how to acquire one (it would seem that the alternative is going to Switzerland..?).. please do let me know..
    Thanks!

Hello all. Just found this Hang site from the link at hang-music.com. I resonate the feelings that Danny and Saggio have expressed recently. I too heard the Hang and immediately thought “where have you been all my life.” I was fortunate to play with Ron Kravitz at a Music For People gathering and obtain an FPenta through his efforts. Quick story: took my cat to the vet a few months ago for a wellness check-up. As we were leaving, a loud screeching wailing ensued from upstairs in the operating room. The vet, who knows I talk to kids/families for a living, “go talk to that cat.” I told him of my playing at home and my animals response (they calmly gather round). I bring the Hang in, sit down next to the cat and play. Within minutes, the cat quieted down. My wife returned later in the afternoon and the office staff were buzzing about the need find music to play in their OR because of the “miracle” that morning with the Hang. I believe the cat shifted to a better place as the blend of notes on the Hang shift our neurons in our brains to a better place either through listening or playing. Happens to me every time I play.
Good to connect to all of you.
    Jeremy

    December, 2006
    Dear Hang Community,

If your notes to us, and the postings on the various internet discussion groups are any indication, there is a lot of energy out there around the HANG - all over the world. This instrument affects people deeply. There are only about 5000 instruments in the world, and there are many, many people who would like one. And yet, you won’t find a hang in your local music store, or on the web. What is going on?

As North American agents of PANArt, the people who make the Hang, we would like to share some thoughts about where the Hang comes from, and to shed a little light on the matter of finding a Hang.

IMPORTANT FACT NO. 1: There is no factory. These instruments are made by hand by two artists in Bern, Switzerland - Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer.  These two artists are devoted to nurturing this wonderful new instrument - which is just as marvelous for them as it is for us - to its full potential.

IMPORTANT FACT NO. 2: The Hang is still young, and still growing. It was born in the year 2000, the result of many years of metallurgical and musicological research. (The Hangmakers were once makers of high quality Steelpans - along with many new things with names like Tubal and Ping and Pong.) It is very much in the interests of the Hang community to support Felix and Sabina in the continuation of their researches, and in the evolution of the Hang itself. Support implies, among other things, leaving them free to work for long periods at a time.

    MARKET EXPECTATIONS:

One of the consequences of global internet culture, and global capitalism in general, is that we tend to imagine an infinite supply of product, of commodities, instantly available. After all, when we order stuff from amazon, they simply come up with more stuff, right?

This is not the case with the Hang. What you have with the Hang is the result of the creativity, in real time, of two individuals. You can go after an internet supplier to speed up the delivery of infinite stuff, but putting pressure on creative artists is counter-productive. Artists work the way they work - creativity and quality are foremost. The way of infinite expansion, and slavery to market demand, is not their way. Please take this to heart when you feel impatient to get your instrument, or when you want to have a special instrument made just for you.

Artists let the muse guide their work, and when the market begins to call the shots on their inventiveness, they may be artisans, but they are no longer artists.

    BUSINESS MODEL:

The PANArt business model is a green one - a no-growth, locally-sourced, arts-based enterprise. We cannot approach such a business model with customer expectations that correspond more to a globalized model — instant gratification with infinite supplies of cheap commodities. The hidden costs in the globalized model - global warming, wage-slavery and environmental degradation - are becoming apparent to all.

If we want quality, integrity and creativity, these qualities must be there in the sourcing of raw materials, the production of the item, the item itself, AND in the interaction with the customer. These things are worth waiting for. The partnership of musician and instrument maker is different from the partnership of Walmart and the buyer of a coffee pot.

    HOW TO FIND A HANG:

In the late spring and summer, the Hangmakers make instruments available - by appointment only - to visitors to their Bern workshop. If you live in Europe, or if you go to Europe during the months of April through September, this is the time of Hang availability in Europe. PANArt does not ship instruments.

The workshop is then closed to the public for the fall and winter months, because that is when the research and development get done. If something is to grow, it needs time and space to do this. Correspondence with the Hangmakers during this time (you can imagine the volume of e-mails) will not be answered rapidly. In the spring, the newest developments will hopefully see the light, and the workshop opens up again, and we will be glad we stayed out of their way.

HOW TO FIND A HANG IN NORTH AMERICA:

We, Ron and David, are not distributors. We do not distribute instruments to retailers, and we cannot order you a specific model. We work as artists’ agents. To serve this new instrument and its music, we have a double job: we serve the needs of Hang players and prospective Hang players, and we also serve the Hangmakers in their own adventure of creativity.

In the fall, a certain number of these musical sculptures are made for the North American market, and we go to Bern and bring them back for our customers. We do our best to match them with our clients’ needs.

This year’s order is already all spoken for. Neither we nor the Hangmakers are yet in a position to quote dates or numbers or prices for next year’s Hangs - or even, for that matter, to describe them - as they are currently under development.

    THE DEVELOPING HANG:

A word on so-called generations of Hangs. From 2000 through 2005, Hangs were categorized according to some 45 different “models.” These models are no longer made, and refer only to Hangs made from the years 2000 through 2005. Most of them have eight notes in their “tone loop,” although some were made with seven - the so-called “Low Hangs.“ The serial numbers of the instruments made from 2000 to 2005 run from 0001 up through approx. 4500. They appear on a label inside the instrument.

With the so-called Second Generation Hang, which was introduced in the spring of 2006, the serial numbers start again at 0001. These numbers are engraved on the edge of the hole (GU). Since they have brass brushed into their surface, the new Hangs are strikingly different in appearance. To date, there have been around 450 of these new instruments made. They do not have model names. While they come in many, many different “tone loops,” they can all be played together, as they all share at least 4 notes. These notes are D (RE) (in the centre), an octave of that D, the A (LA) that falls between these two D’s, and an octave of that A. Here is but one example of such a “tone loop”: D3 (central note); tone loop: A3 C4 D4 E4 F4 G4 A4.

[A word of caution about e-bay. Some folks have been burned by scams. If a hang appears on e-bay, make sure the seller will give you a serial number. These numbers can be traced back to the original buyer. Ask the seller to play the hang for you on the phone. If the seller cannot do this, there would be reason to pause. If he/she can do this, then you will hear the quality of the tuning.]

    “HANG-OUTS”:

Over the last few years there have been large springtime gatherings of Hang players at the Bern workshop. This will not be happening in 2007. Instead, there are local hang gatherings blooming all over the place - last month in the UK, in the spring in Holland, etc. We like to call them “hang-outs.” These are initiated locally by YOU.

    IN CLOSING:

We hope this information helps clear up some of the confusion around the youngest acoustic instrument in the world. If you reside in the USA or Canada and have other questions, and/or would like to have your name placed on a list for subsequent Hang shipments, feel free to contact us. Please include a phone number with your reply.

Thank you for your passion for the Hang; this is what keeps it - and us - moving and growing.

For persons that no know we culture in february we celebrated Carnaval and exist a lot of gruping and they present your performance in different scene and exist a official aid. One of this groups is “Agarrate Catalina” the style of them is “Murga”. Its simillar a chir because are 15 singers but them styl of sing its so different and they have 3 drumers, uno play de snare another play the bass drum an another play cymbals. The lyrics of murga talk about sociality problems with a funny form to said. The finsh part show are so emotive and one of drumers play the hang drum and crated a climate so so beatifull.
I have 2 questions. First is how mach and the second is where can i bay one.

aloha- i am writing from Hawaii- a few years ago my brother was touched so deeply by the music from a hang. He had cancer and the sound seemed to replenish his spirit whenever he would hear it. He died over a year ago…and so i went on a search for a hang… I was living in Barcelona and I fell in love with a hang and the hang player- whom I have never seen again- he would play often outside of the Picasso Museum….and i would go to try and find him and would just sit and be soothed by the song. It seemed to replenish my spirit the way that it did my brothers- and somehow I felt closer to John (my brother) everytime I heard the sound. I never got the chance to thank that hangplayer- as he helped my grief, he healed me without even realizing it. All I remember about him is his blue gloves, and dark blond hair….and the music. I have thought about him so much since leaving Spain- and I am hoping to put the word out there that if anyone knows such a man- if they could sincerely thank him….and if anyone is ever thinking of selling a hang-I would do anything to be blessed with such an instrument. It has not left my mind for a moment of this year- a dear friend of mine will be in Switzerland this week- and I am praying it may be possible to get one- any advice, or links would be much appreciated. Thank you all for your love of this divine sound….thank you to Sabrina and Felix for making this unexplainable instrument. It has effected my life in such a profound way. Mahalo

Hello, I’m writing from Argentina (South América) I’m Instrument Builder and also a bassist. I’m totally hipnotized like many people around here with the hang, but I think it’s not going to be possible to see one of these (maybe in a few years if a miracle happens & the Imperialism & Capitalism & violence stop raping our continent & Third world raises up, maybe) Here the Hang it’s just like a urban legend. Please, If anyone knows if there is at least one of these here in Argentina, please let me know.
Sorry for the English…And sorry for the uncomfortable comments but, It’s the reality… Good luck!!

Thank you so much for all this wonderful information. I live in a community in NZ and a hang has visited us this week, thanks to an english wwoofer. A life changing experience! And, thanks to your excellent spam-free site (I read the whole thing), I now have all the information I need to begin the Journey (and spend an enormous amount of money!) Thanks to those who commented on supporting the artists in their dedication and integrity, and to those who paint the picture of this sound as a healing gift to the Planet and all who sail in Her. I personally see the human singing voice as a gift of well-being and thanksgiving to All, and I sing in that spirit. This exquisite instrument is clearly a great gift too, for the planet and for all the people who are so moved by it.

I too like many others have been hunting for a hang for some time,.. i heard the instrument for the first time while studying in new zealand, another student was using a hang for a percussion element in one of his recording projects. i remember a large group of us staring in awe at the sight and sound of this instrument being played. by far and away the most beautful instrument i have ever heard, tonal quality and depth like nothing i have seen. i plan to take a trip through europe in june/july of this year (07) traveling through germany and heading towards denmark…will the hanghaus be open again and would it be possible to buy(or talk to someone about buying) one around this time? i can imagine if the demand for the instruments on here is anything to go by this may well not be possible. i can live and dream in hope! thank you for any response in advance and thank you to to all the guidance already given by the comments on this page.i look forward to learning more and taking steps closer to having a hang of my own!

The Hang in North America - Update to Post #132

    March, 2007

    Dear Richard’s Notes Hang Community:

Here is an update from David Kaetz and Ron Kravitz, Canadian and U.S. agents for PANArt Hangbau, AG. For more background info, including a review of the development of the Hang through first and second generations, see our post #132, above, from Dec. 22/06. This post takes us into 2007.

    THE SECOND GENERATION, 2007:
“Second generation” Hangs first appeared a year ago, in the spring of 2006. As the technology of tuning continues to evolve, the tone of the Hangs now being made will be clearer yet. As last year, each Hang comes with a double protective shell - with the difference that the new shells are a little thicker than in 2006. The new bags, back-pack style, will have added padding on both sides.

RETRO-FITTING THE DOUBLE SHELL AND THE BACK-PACK FOR FIRST GENERATION HANGS:
It is possible to adapt the protective double shell to fit Hangs made in 2000 - 2005. If you currently own a first generation Hang, and would like to be able to carry it around a bit more securely, please let us know so that we can get an idea of how many people would like to order just the double-shell/back-pack combo.

OBTAINING A NEW HANG IN NORTH AMERICA:
There are far fewer Hangs being made annually than a few years ago. The new instruments are even more labour-intensive than the old. For more information, and/or to get on the list to order a Hang, please contact us directly. In Canada, contact David at hang@penguinmail.com. In the US, contact Ron, at musicinthemoment@earthlink.net. PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR PHONE NUMBER.

Again, thank you for your enthusiasm and patience,

    Blessings,

    David Kaetz
    &
    Ron Kravitz

Hi everybody I am from Costa Rica(Central America) and I am really interested to get a Hang, but it’s so difficult to get it and I don’t know too much about the scales in the instrument, maybe If get 2 or 3 hangs I can get the chromatic scale, is it possible?
