so cool leaving this message after a 4 year gap in comments. It's fun reading all the happy thoughts about the Hang and which model to choose, things have really changed now. mostly due to youtube and ebay, hysteria and negativity have set in, yet the Hang itself remains to be a thing of beauty and there are still so many people that have yet to discover it.

Mike: If you can back a bit in this thread you'll find active forums for hang users. I suggest you post in those as well. Good luck.

I just heard the Hang for the first time and, being both a percussionist and a trombone player, I can honestly say its the most amazing sound I've ever heard come from an instrument. I am extremely interested in learning more about the Hang drum, and even possibly owning my own one day. If you have any information, whether it be history, different types of scales, or even sales information, please email me at: xthrowyourxroses at yahoo dot com. Thank you!!

I see your point and their point of making the hang accessible by keeping the price low and only selling to people who want to play it seriously, but it would seem to me that there must be another way of doing this because their way seems quite odd to me.

But, it doesn't matter, I'm done with the hang so others can buy into this if they like. Good luck to all.

PANArt limited the number a single individual can buy. They would never sell five or ten Hanghang to one person. This is not the problem.

The problem is, that only a fool would sell his creation for a price far under the market price. So without the agreement PANArt has no alternative to highten the price to the market price. When you fight for the right of the owner to achieve the maximum of profit he can get, when he sell his hang, then you also must respect the right of the makers to achieve the maximum of profit. So the hang price will be 4000, 5000 Euro or more. If the makers decide not to achieve the maximum of profit how can anyone moan that their customers can not? Equal rights for both parties!

The other reason I mentioned in my post: The hang makers cannot satisfy the whole demand. Not everyone who says "I want a hang", can get a hang. So who shall get one and who not? The hang makers decided: We will support those who are deeply interested to play the hang. Those people don't worry about eventually reselling prices because they don't plan to ever sell their hang.

Let's look at it in a strong economical point of view: Someone buys an Integral Hang with the agreement. After a year he find out that the hang is not the instrument that satisfies him. He don't want to play it any longer and resell it to PANArt for the same 1200 Euro he paid for it a year ago. Let's compare this with the alternative: If he had not bought the hang, his money could work for him with an income return of perhaps 5%. These are 60 Euro. These 60 Euro are his loss. The hang makers ask their customers: Are you willing to risk 60 Euro for the chance to play an Integral Hang for one year. I don't see any reason why the hang makers shouldn't allocate the hang to those who are willing to risk 60 Euro.

Your alternative (to increase the number of yearly built hanghang dramatically) is impossible. The hang makers could perhaps increase the number by 10 or 20 % (my own guess) but could never triple or quadruple it, which would be necessary to make your alternative realistic.

Michael: I disagree. PanArt can keep selling hangs for a set price and limit the number a single individual can buy to prohibit buying just for the sake of resale. I realize they want to put a damper on auctions but by making the hang rare and mystical they are doing as much to create the auction aftermarket as hang owners.

Hi Richard,
the opinon about the agreement depends on the specific interest of a person:

a) If you are an owner of a Hang and want to sell it with as high profit as possible, the agreement ist very annoying for you.

b) If you are a person who owns no Hang but want to own one, you are very lucky that this agreement exists, because you are able to buy a new Hang for a payable price. Without this agreement PANArt would never sell a new Hang for1200 Euro. They would take 4000 or 5000 Euro as in Ebay auctions.

PANArt had to decide whom they want to support. Those who want to sell their Hang or those wo want to play it. They decided to support those who want to play it. So if the agreement discourage people who think about the profit they can make selling their Hang before they bought it, it is is good for all those who want to play a Hang for a payable price. This is exactly for what the agreement was made for. ;-)
