Log splitting underway
Sunday, June 13th, 2004
We heat our house with wood. Somewhere near 4 cords a year. In past years I’ve split it by hand (ugh), rented hydraulic splitters, and borrowed them. A month ago I went out and bought one but it just was a tad to whimpy for my taste. However, I bought it! Sheesh, what’s a person to do? The folks at the store I bought it offered me a deal: I trade in the whimpy one for a used one with more power. I went for it and I’m not sorry I did. huge 13 gallon hydraulic tank, 8 hp Briggs and plenty of force behind the 26 ton cylinder. This machine will outlast me and it’s a pleasure to use. I did well.

My guess is that I’ll get through my entire log pile in a month of casual work. I split about 1.5 cords today in maybe 3 hours of work. I was doing other things as well to mix it up (burning slash, watering the garden, and more).
The problem is that we have so much wood (maybe 10 cords) that needs to be burnt this year I might have to sell some. Hmmmm, a new business. Uh oh.

Sounds like you have a very efficient wood splitter, Richard. You should be able to split all that wood by the end of next week, right?
I’m going to leave a bit until the beginning of August. I hear we’ll have some free help around here then!
