Makes perfect sense and I agree. However, maybe there's a large speed bump coming in G5s and Apple wants the entire line except mini to go G5. If that's the case, the current G5 linup will speed bump, the PBs will come in faster, and the iBooks at the lowest speed. Just a hunch, I really have no idea but, would love to have the iBook's AirPort range in a PowerBook so if they ever went G5 I might consider a 12" model (the 14" seems like a dog to me for some reason).

Either way, I need a new PowerBook badly and the next rev is likely to see a buy out of me, even if it's just a faster G4.

I find this difficult to believe, just because I can't see Apple releasing a G5 PowerBook and iBook in the same quarter. Apple seems to like having their iBooks a step below the current top of the line stuff, which makes sense. For example, how long did we have a G4 laptops before the iBooks went G4? Apple waited until after the G5 became available to move the iBooks to the G4.
Long story short: G5 PowerBooks I can see (and hope I do). I can't see G5 iBooks at all, at least in the near future.

Right, I saw that although Macworld (print) has such a long advance I doubt they were using this news as a source. Rather, I think they were thinking what the rest of us are: how can apple release tiger and all this new stuff and push portables when their entire lineup is running G4 chips? Gotta differentiate PBs from minis too...

In thinking about this I came to two possible solutions:

1. wait for this to happen (a G5 PowerBook)

2. Get a loaded 17" G5 iMac and a current 12" PowerBook and use SuperDuper to sync them.

#2 is not a bad idea but I have tended to be a one computer guy for a long while now and feel comfortable on a PowerBook. So, I'll probably just wait. But, GarageBand makes my machine smoke which is not great (800 mhz TiBook). Grrrr....

The February Macworld mentions new a PowerBook G5 this year, perhaps in the summer before WWDC.
