Andy: Yes, there are sensors in both the card and battery doors that have electrical contacts that you might try fiddling with and cleaning. Keep fiddling with things and keeping track of what you're doing, you might solve it yet.

Yeah, I'd have a spare battery, i use it occasionally and the camera operates the same with either battery.. Do you think replacing the sd card door would work? You said the sensor is in the door, correct?

Erin: I think you've proved that the problem isn't with the flash, it's with the lens. The reason the flash triggers the problem is that it's putting more drain on the power supply but in fact, the lens seems like the problem. It's an inexpensive lens and you can replace it cheaply or get a better one. It's not worth having it fixed.

Thanks for your excellent report and good job sorting out the problem.

I have a canon rebel xt with error 99. I only have the lens that came with it (Canon EF-S 18-55mm). The error comes when trying to use the flash. It will pop up but then the camera gives an error before taking the picture.

Any setting (including fully automatic, M, Tv, Av) results in error 99 if the camera needs to use the flash. I've put my lens on a friend's rebel xt and they get the error 99. I also put their lens on my camera and get no error. If I take pictures with a fast shutter speed where no flash is needed, it works fine.

I've tried cleaning the contacts, fully charging the battery, leaving the battery and card (Sandisk Ultra II) out for an extended period of time but nothing works.

I've found this website to be very useful and wanted to post on here in case I can help someone else. I believe I will have to replace my lens.

Steve W: Sorry to hear that although it's an older camera body so as they say, things happen. I'm sure they tested it without the lens to determine this but you may want to do that to make sure. The kit lens is notorious for being fragile and causing problems. Will you go ahead and replace the shutter or put the money towards a new body?

Hi Richard,
Sorry, it's the Rebel XT with the stock 18-55mm IS lens. I tried new batteries etc. Ended up taking it in to get it looked at, and they informed me that it needs the shutter assembly - $279.
