Glad to help Jordan. I'm assuming you have the kit lens that came with it. If you don't have other lenses and don't take the lens off much you might consider that the contacts corroded because of damp conditions. Be aware that this can happen so keep your camera as dry as you can. Thanks for posting.

thank-you so much! I have had my 1000D for just over 1 year and was really gutted when error 99 kept showing up. I just tried the eraser technique and presto! It goes again!! Thanks again!!

I think I will send it in for service, since none of the basic fixes seem to be working for this.

Thank you for your help, though.

SBibb: The switch in the battery compartment door is not in the door but in the body. I'm guessing that switch is your problem and unless you can do very small component level work on electronics, you should send the camera to Canon for service.

I tried your suggestions, cleaning the contacts (in both the SD reader and the battery), as well as wedging a piece of paper between the battery and camera body, with no effect. I also found the battery compartment door came off, but was easily put back on, and the issue remained the same.

Reading Erik's earlier comment, it sounds like we may have a similar issue, since it will shoot fine with no card in the reader and "Shoot Without Card" on.

My current solution is to open and close the SD compartment door everytime I turn the camera on, which allows me to shoot but gets monotonous when I forget to do it and want to take a quick picture.

I plan on having it sent in for repairs at the end of the week. Canon's warrenty is out, but I have an extended warrenty on it through Best Buy (where I bought it) that I'm hoping will cover it.

Thanks for the help,
SBibb

Adam: If you get no error messages with your Canon lens then I think you can safely assume that the problem is the Sigma lens. Avoid using it until you get it fixed.

The first thing I'd do is get in touch with Sigma and find out if there's a firmware upgrade for the lens. If there is it will usually be free of charge. Do that and see if it helps.

The lens also may be broken and if this is the case you should ask Sigma what it will cost to fix it. If the repair cost is over half the price of a new lens my advice would be to start shopping and if you do, be a bit weary of Sigma lenses: The cheaper Canon lenses and Sigma lenses (and Tamron and Tokina) aren't built all that tough so an occasional bump can cause problems.

I'm not advocating that everyone go out and spend a fortune on Canon L lenses but the fact is, they're built to withstand more physical abuse than lower end lenses. It's not just the optics, it's also the build quality.

Good luck, let me know what Sigma says about that lens.

Hi there. I've had this problem for a while now, with one particular lens. I've tried the clean but it's now seized (the lens is locked at aperture preview, so it's far too dark looking through the VF, and does not auto-focus). I presume my lens is bust but would appreciate your thoughts!

1. I started getting occasional Error 99 messages, which were usually solved by taking the battery out and replacing. Over time it's got worse. I've cleaned the contacts; I don't get Error 99 messages anymore but the camera and lens don't work together (problem as above). I've tried cleaning all contacts.

2. Canon 400D

3. Sigma DC 18-200 1:3.5-6.3 (OS).

4. Yes. Canon EF 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM works fine.

5. P

6. Usually on relatively low battery.

7. Yep. Error 99 messages now mainly resolved, but lens aperture seems to be locked.

8. Bought in UK, live and use in Bangladesh.

Many thanks

Sorry to hear that Erik. You haven't given me enough information to comment. I guess you need to send your camera in to Canon for service.
