My wife and I saw a pilliated woodpecker on our deck railing this morning. We see them every year or two at our home south of Seattle about 40 miles. I took several pictures of him as he hopped along the railing looking for bugs. He took a 2 inch x 1/2 deep chunk out of the railing before flying off.

Jane,

Good question. And, I'm amazed that this ultra shy bird would peck at a deck. Maybe the use of a camera to photograph them will keep them away.

What they're after is insects so maybe if you have ants you might consider trying to get rid of them.

We have smaller woodpeckers destroying the clapboards on our garage. I put up a whirlygig like a scarecrow and it helped. I hung some suet on a nearby tree and that did it. However, the damage is done, at some point we'll need to re-side that wall. ugh.

What can one do about damage to a deck from the "work" of the pileated woodpecker? Is there a product one can apply to keep the bird away?

Joe, it sure sounds like one. <a href="http://www.richardsnotes.org/archives/2005/12/10/piliated-woodpecker/" rel="nofollow">Here's</a> a picture I took of the one attacking a tree here last year.

Does your bird look like this?

there is a large dead tree in my yard. i noticed some serious fresh damage up about 20 feet high. yesterday i saw a huge woodpecker attacking the area with wood chips flying. about as big as a crow. was this a pilliated woodpecker.

used to see quite a few in the woods near here (sw missouri)

Reba, wow, you are extremely lucky. We hear them but don't get to see them but one every few years. Now, when you see an ivorybill woodpecker, let us know.
