4th of July flares on beach
Monday, July 4th, 2005
It is a tradition on Lake Waramaug (Connecticut) to light signal fires or burn flares on the perimeter of the lake.
Either towns do this on their respective town beaches (Warren, New Preston, Kent, Washington) or private property owners do it. This is two or three private property owners on the New Preston side of the lake burning flares.

We used to do something similar on our lake. Each New Year’s eve at midnight, all of the residents on the lake would bring their xmas trees down to their respective beaches and set them ablaze. It was quite a site.
Justin: great idea. Good way to get rid of old trees and nice way to make a fire (well, less than nice, the oil in pines makes a messy fire). I’ll bring it up at our next town meeting. Where was that by the way?
What a wonderful idea!
Not only can the wealthy residents (part & full time) drive there V8 SUV & Hummers but they can express their total disregard for clean air by being entertained by burning road flares!
Who cares about the enviroment tomorrow when their is entertainment to be had today!
God bless lifestyles of the rich and famous. USA #1. United we stand!
Wow Matthew, you seem to be mad at the folks who live on or near Lake Waramaug. Have you ever been here?
I didn’t see any Hummers in the parking lot during the fireworks and yes, some folks around here drive SUVs but more of them drive Subaru Outbacks which seems like the most popular car in the area. I drive a truck but I do it because I use it to haul things like firewood and rocks and dirt.
Yes, we burn wood but we do it cleanly with a modern stove.
Do wealthy people live around or near Lake Waramaug? You bet. I’m not one of them but I know many and I’d venture to say that most of the people who live around here are quite conservative in lifestyle.
As a matter of fact, having lived in numerous parts of the country, I’d stack this place up against almost any other in terms of environmental conciousness and living lightly on the land. The lake is alive and well thanks to an active association that keeps traffic down, bad marinelife out, and development to a minimum.
I think it’s important to disassociate the 4th of July from mindless neo-con patriotism: just because one celebrates the birth of this country doesn’t mean one is a “love it or leave it” type. By the way, there’s Canada day as well with fireworks.
