iPhoto to Aperture
Saturday, April 15th, 2006
Two things have happened recently that are significant for PowerBook users who are also photographers like me:
1. Apple has released the MacBook Pro which is powerful enough to drive any external flat screen display at any size and has enough balls to run higher end applications, such as Aperture.
2. Apple has released Aperture 1.1, a significant upgrade, dropped the price to $299 and offered a credit to early adopters who bought it at $499.
Given the fact that I’m spending more time taking and organizing and printing photographs in a variety of forms and sizes, I yearn for the non-destructive editing capabilities of a program like Aperture but I also would like to continue using a portable computer.
Now this is possible and it’s just a matter of time before I make this transition.
This post was prompted by this post by Fraser Speirs, a photographer and flickr member who wrote the iPhoto flickr export plugin. He recently bought a MacBook Pro and Aperture and ran into an issue while importing an iPhoto library. Take note if you plan to make this transition.

I thought this news would interest you! When thinking about getting a MacBook Pro keep in mind that later this year Intel is expected to intro a new processor that will be 20% faster than the current MacBook Pro processor yet won’t require more energy. So maybe hold off buying decisions until fall/winter if you are not too much in a hurry :-)
David: thanks for the advice, I’m in no rush and might buy aperture before the computer just to start learning how to use it. However, my whole setup seems to be working pretty well at the moment so maybe I’ll hold off on buying anything until something doesn’t work. Thanks again for the tip, I’m sure I’ll follow it.
