Bob: The head removal is quite easy, not tedious at all. Just pull the ink and then the head unclips. It's very simple. You can do the entire cleaning in a few minutes.

I have the Canon Pixma Pro 9000 and it's the same size as the i9900 and a much improved printer. I've had mine for well over a year and love it. It's the direct replacement for the i9900 in Canon's lineup.

Finally gave up on the i9900. May try the tedious printhead removal and cleaning (alcohol, air pressure, water and prayer).
But is it worth it? Have a mp530 - 5 ink - multifunction that I have been using instead. frankly, 4x6 look good.
Any opinion on next step up (not the pro9000k which would occupy half the room)? What about the i4500? would it be visibly better?
Opinions? Advantage of 4500 is it uses same ink cartrige as 530.

Edward: you have to clean the bottom paper feed rollers and for that you need a roller cleaning kit.

<a href="http://www.redrivercatalog.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=RRP&Category_Code=cleankit
" target="_blank">Printtex Printer Cleaning Kit</a>

You can find these at Staples and Office Depot as well.

They consist of alcohol-soaked fiberous paper which you run through the printer a few times (instructions are included with the kit).

All you really need for the bottom rollers is the soaked paper, not the other part of the kit.

Works like a charm and if you do this a few times a year you're covered.

Hi Richard,
How to get rid of black vertical lines on the back of paper after print out. I used only (4x6) Canon PR-101 or Epson Ultra Premium Photo Paper Glossy. I already used method on holding the form feed button down until the light blinks three times. Problem not resolves.

Mark, I'm pretty sure what you're looking for for panoramic printing exists but I'm not sure what it's called. Have you searched with google for various things? I'll bet you come up with something.

Hello Richard.

I have found this blog recently and it has been a valuable resourse, thank you very much.

I have the version of the printer that has the CD print capability, the i9950 and have found it to be very good.

Over the last 2 or more years I have owned it, I have tried various things to reduce my print costs (different paper/re-filling cartridges etc) but non have been very successful.

I have, however, just installed a CIS for the system & am very happy the results, colour wise, economy.

I have a question but I am not sure if you or any of the contributors would be able to help.

I like taking panoramic pictures and would like to print them myself.

Do you know if anyone has modified the print driver to enable paper lenghts longer than 23 inches?. If someone knows how or could point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated.

I would then purchase the roll paper from Canon and have a book-binder friend of mine run it through his splitter to 13 inches wide.

Regards

Chris, I think a new print head is in order although I'm no expert on such matters. Have you taken the print head out and cleaned it with alcohol and swabs? You might try that if you haven't yet but if you have I'd say you ought to see about a new one. If the price is too high, unless you've got a big ink supply for the i9900 you might consider this an opportunity to move to the Pro 9000. I went from the i9900 to the 9000 and I'm glad I did, it's a better printer. Yes, on some images I still get banding but nothing like the i9900.

Have a banding problem i guess, I've tried all the cleaning methods listed above and no difference. The pics i print will have horizontal bands running across certain areas, they are barcode-like. The test prints after deep cleaning several times and print head alignment are all bad. Dont know what else to do...I've had the printer for about 3years now and in the beginning it printed fine, but my use has been sporadic the past two years and its been idle for a few months here and there. Should i replace the print head or take it to the canon shop? What do you think is the issue? Is there a loose connection or contact with the print head and circuit board? Help!

That's a stellar image TJ. I'm impressed, seriously impressed.

I print 12x18 on 13x19" paper routinely. I like the margin for mounting prints in mats and it's a standard pre-cut mat opening size.

I can't speak to the borderless feature as I never use it but it's possible it's got issues, certainly.

Glad you got it sorted, your images are worth printing well.

I've just printed three photos on 13x19 semi-gloss paper, but I did them at 12x18 (instead of borderless 13x19 prints as I've tried before). Two of the photos were new ones that I've not printed before, and the third was the photo I printed last night (13x19 borderless) that showed the awful banding and ink spots.

All three 12x18 prints came out PERFECT. There were no awful bands (as seen in last night's 13x19 borderless print) and no ink spots.

One of the new photos I just printed was mostly all blurry, out of focus areas:
<a href="http://www.texbrick.com/photo/hi_08/hi2369.jpg" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.texbrick.com/photo/hi_08/hi2369.jpg</a>

I'm pretty happy that I'm getting good results now. I guess that my problems are a function of the particular image and the print size. Perhaps the combination of certain tones in blur areas and doing borderless prints just freaks the printer out and results in really bad banding and ink spots? Or maybe it's just the borderless feature that's not working properly?

Thanks for your help and suggestions, Richard!
