Queen Anne’s Lace
Friday, July 14th, 2006
Washington, Connecticut. I was walking along a mowed area running through a meadow in the Macricostas Preserve of the Steep Rock Land Trust and the Queen Anne’s Lace was so thick I had to stop and attempt a few images. These plants are so spindly that they will not hold still in a light wind. Each time I was about to press the shutter release a nice gentle breeze came up and my subject was gone. I stuck around for thirty minutes just to get a single decent image. The upside of the breeze is that I came home without a single mosquito bite, a record for me.
My tripod and camera bag set up in a mowed area running through a meadow in the Macricostas Preserve of the Steep Rock Land Trust.
This place is ten minutes from our house: walk down this mowed section, across a short boardwalk toward the trees, cross a small stream via footbridge, up a short hill to parking area, into truck and a few minutes up the road to our house. I’m just beginning to explore this place and I can’t wait to venture a bit deeper. There was absolutely no one here the entire time I was and it’s photo heaven.

You are extremely lucky to live near such spectacular countryside. I really miss it since moving to the city. Another spectacular image. I like seeing pictures of your equipment in use too.
Damn. I used the word ’spectacular’ twice in one paragraph. I hate it when that happens.
I wanted to use “spectacular”, but well, Jamie got ‘em all. ;)
I agree with Jamie and was thinking the same thing about your home area. Lovely shot of the Queen Anne’s Lace.
Jamie: no problem, one undoes the other ;). Thanks.
Dale: I do know I’m lucky to live near such photogenic stuff, however, we all know that when the mood is right we can make nice photographs of anything, anywhere. Still, such a huge supply of this flowers from another planet is fun to explore. Dang wind! Grrrrr.
My adjective for the Queen Ann’s lace is ‘exquisite’. I’ve never looked at it from that angle before.
And to Jamie: Me, too. Your second comment is exactly what I would’ve written.
Linda: Delighted you like the image. Hey, you first told me about this spot (and I didn’t get over there until much later). I’m going over again tomorrow morning, pretty early so we’ll see what we get. We’re talking about doing a show in the red farmhouse in the fall; just images taken there. I’ll keep you all posted.
Richard,
Your Queen Anne’s Lace photos are beautiful. It has always been my favorite flower, it was also my grandmother’s favorite. You do it great justice! I have tried to send you an email and was not able to get in touch…if you would, please be in touch with me at the above address.
Thank you.
Lee
