Apple’s New Calling: The iPhone

Time Magazine’s Lev Grossman on Apple’s New Calling: The iPhone.
“In a way iPhone is the wrong name for it. It’s a handheld computing platform that just happens to contain a phone.”
Excellent overview and historical article.
I just got back from MacWorld (wow). This article has the iPhone pegged – all it needs is WP capability and a camera, and the computer as we know it is obsolete. And as soon as the touch-screen technology the iPhone uses hits the iMac – keyboards, mice, all gone. A new era. Scary and exciting.
Caitlin: Dang, you went to Macworld. I’m jealous!
The iPhone has a camera as far as I know and it does text messaging which is essentially WP although the onscreen keyboard is now well reviewed.
Yeah, you get it, scary and exciting at the same time. Hey, we don’t have to dump our computers for this, it’s just another option. An interesting one for sure.
If Cisco has an issue about Apple using iPhone, Apple should rename it “Apple Phone” and be done with it. Why waste time and money on lawsuits.
I’ve been disappointed with MacWorld the last few times so I didn’t go this time. I’ll check out the iPhone when it’s available at local stores.
Mayank: I would think they would not have gone ahead with the name if there was a serious problem. Apple does have lawyers (I’ll say) and my guess is there will be a settlement on this.
I was at Macworld last year and didn’t like it much: smaller and less interesting than the old days. But, maybe things will pick up again someday. Who knows…
