Frozen Lake Waramaug
Sunday, February 11th, 2007
Warren, Connecticut. The big lake down the road from us has finally frozen enough for ice fishermen (and photographers) to walk around freely. You can see a few ice fisherman holes with flags in this image. I walked all the way across and back and it was at least a foot thick everywhere. A few easy to spot places in a few alcoves where steams empty into the lake are still thin and dangerous but those spots are easy to see. One thing that’s very unsettling is that the ice groans as it stress fractures and refreezes. You can see a fracture point running away from me in this picture. The fishermen reassured me that this sound is good: it means the lake is making more ice but it reminded me of that awful scene in the movie Never Cry Wolf where Charles Martin Smith falls through a frozen lake during spring thaw. Come April I’m not going near this thing.
