In Background Music Dave Hyatt discusses what happens when Safari’s window is in the background while processes are running, like javascripts, animations, and plugins that do various things.
Modern web sites can force a browser to do quite a bit of work and those processes can chew up a lot of memory and processor time. Leaving a browser (Safari or others) running in the background with pages open that are churning away can be problematic.
