Not so green: aerial photos of greenland and beyond

The new site not so green has posted a number of my aerial images with corresponding google earth screen shots. Wow, nice to see my images on another site and of course, terrible to see the processing I did of those images. Maybe I’d better revisit them at some point…

Hi Richard,
Well done sir! Very interesting comparisons to Google Earth :-)
Best,
Jon
kudos richard - the compares w/google are fascinating!
absolutely astounding. The comparison is amazing. I used to love to look out the windows of planes and wonder what/who was down there… ahh - one more mystery gone…
John, Will, Caitlin. Yeah, its nice that someone spent the time to put that site together as it really makes the pictures come alive with context. The only downside for me (again) is my early weak processing of the images. Oh well, whatever. Live and learn. or, at any rate, live.
Richard: Don’t know why you’re so down on the image processing - the shots look terrific. My aerial shots are always a hazy mess with almost no contrast. Yours are crystal clear with great colors. Thanks for sharing these on Flickr - I really like your aerial set.
Congrats, Richard. The comparisons are very cool.
Don’t be so hard on yourself regarding the processing. They’re fine. And unless you got the seat with the Canon “L” quality window inserts, we should remember that the shooting conditions were less than ideal. ;-) Well done.
jpo: the key is LEVELS. Thank Dale (above) for that. No matter what image editor you use, try pulling in on the ends of your levels control and you’ll see a marked difference. Especially on the white end.
As Dale says, when shooting from a plane window you’re shooting through UV glass and plastic with scratches on it… not the best optical conditions.
You may find this earlier post useful: How to shoot pictures from planes. It doesn’t cover post processing but it does give you some tips on shooting.
