Isaac Stern’s Purple Coneflower
Wednesday, July 11th, 2007
New Milford, Connecticut. We were having dinner at a friend’s house and she had to water some plants for some people on her road who were out of town. She said to come along and bring my camera because they had a great flower garden and oh boy, did they ever. The place used to be Isaac Stern’s country house but had since passed to another family after his death. Thinking of his playing (I’ve seen him play) coupled with the thought of him sitting in this most excellent flower garden gave me goosebumps. I love the purple coneflower and will forever associate it’s soaring shape with his amazing music.

Great story Richard, and stunning photographs of those spectacular Coneflowers. I was lucky to be with you that evening. What a beautiful garden, and so amazing to see Isaac Stern’s spacious home and adjacent studio in that lovely rural setting. I’ll long remember our time photographing around the flower gardens near the swimming pool and main house on a warm summer’s night in July.
Gary, yes, and I’ll long remember our paranoia about going to jail for breaking and entering!
Lovely pictures of a garden I loved when my Dad was alive. The best view was always from the downstairs “yellow bedroom”, because the entire picture window was filled with flowers from the lowest tier up to the top.
If you have any wide angle shots you’d be willing to share, my family would love to see them.
Thanks for bringing back some lovely memories.

Shira: Oh my, what a pleasure to hear from you. I did take a shot of the entire backyard as well as the studio from the lower flower garden. I’d rather not post them but I’m happy to share them with you. I notice you have an AOL email address and AOL has “issues” with large image attachments to email. Do you have another email address I can send to? My friend Gary who was with me also took some shots of the back area of the house that I’m sure he’d be delighted to share with you as well.
Please email me at rwanderman at gmail dot com and we can work out getting you the images.
I’m delighted you found these images and the thought of you and your dad enjoying this place warms my heart.
