Dolphin pose
Friday, August 17th, 2007
New Preston, Connecticut. Our teacher, Anne Hungerford doing dolphin pose after class. Downward facing dog on one’s elbows is one way to look at this pose and it’s useful on its own but also as a developmental step for a headstand and other inverted poses.
I’m not sure of the sanskrit name for this pose. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi…
This pose is commonly called dolphin and is a preparation for pincha mayruasana (peacock pose; forearm balance)

I teach yoga in Boston and was admiring your photography. I’ve never done a yoga photoshoot and think it’s time so I can promote myself a bit more. Can you please give me an idea what someone like yourself charges?
peace,
wendy
Thanks for the resources Wendy and I’m delighted you like my yoga photographs. I’ve got hundreds more that I’ve not posted.
I’ve only done one big yoga studio shoot for pay, the rest of my shots are of my teacher (above) and my wife.
The classes I’m in are taught in a gym which is not the best place to do serious photography as it’s got too much stuff behind each shot and the light really is bad. I’ve gotten nice shots there but it’s not ideal.
Were you interested in someone (me) shooting you in class, teaching or just some poses to use on a web site or in print?
I live in Connecticut so Boston can be done in a day but the deal is the travel to and from. The actual shoot would be affordable but I’m not sure how we’d work the travel time. But, feel free to email me and we can discuss it to see if we could come to an agreement.

The “Dolphin” pose in Sanskrit is “Makarasana” which the name is mistakenly refered as “Crocodile” pose. For Crocodile pose in Sanskrit is actually “Nakrasana”. Hope this helps everyone.
Thanks Luke.
Can you share a source by any chance for the Sanskrit? Thanks so much!
Abby: My wife says she uses http://www.yogajournal.com/ for this kind of stuff.
http://yoga.theholisticcare.com/yoga/60-makarasana-dolphin-pose.html this site also quotes dolphin as makarasana
Thanks Talia.
Isn’t this pose more like a cross between scorpion pose and downward facing dog pose? Could also be called either svana vrschikasana (dog scorpion pose) or adho mukha vrschika svanasana (face down scorpion dog pose)? Svana is sanskrit for dog and vrschika being sanskrit for scorpion. I don’t know where the original connection with dolphin or crocodile came from? I don’t see any conncetion with either a dolphin or a crocodile.
Sam, I have no idea. I’m just the photographer.
thx Richard :) After giving it more thought, I’ve suddenly become keen on ardha vrschikasana – easy scorpion or ardha pincha mayurasana – easy feathered peacock

This pose is an easier version of, and excellent preparation for, both the above poses :)
