Miniature Ornament

Warren, Connecticut. Digging through my junk box of treasures I came across this small ornament which is made of colored filament wound around a small wooden ball. I’ve had this for a long time and I think it’s common enough so that other people probably have them as well. This ornament is less than 3/4 inch in diameter so it’s not really a holiday ornament but at one time it had a loop coming out of it so it could be hung. Cheap earrings. Not.
Over the years I’ve thought it would be fun to go to the factory that makes these to see how they’re wound. Then I put it back in its box and forget about it for another ten years.

I knew a lot of moms in Japan who are in to Temari – a Japanese folk art involving colored thread wound around balls – check out http://www.temari.com/
Leave it to my goddaughter to come up with this. I’m absolutely sure that this ball is a Temari ball but it sure looks machine made. Wow Caitlin, great link, thanks.
Flickr has a load of temari tagged images.
a knockout shot, richard – the subtleties of light, shadow and reflection!
Thanks Will. So, you got wifi or broadband in your new digs?
nice photo, 100mm f/2.8 macro lens works great!
Yes Gedas, it’s a wonderful lens. Thanks.
