John F. Burns: What Cats Know About War

Every now and then Jim Lehrer (The NewsHour) interviews John F. Burns, the New York Times’ Baghdad bureau chief and I look forward to those interviews because Burns is fascinating both to hear and to see. I was surprised and delighted to read this more casual piece of his on cats in Baghdad: What Cats Know About War.

Just read the cats article and it is wonderful. Brings up many feelings about human kindness in the middle of war. It really messes with my perspective about human basic instints- loving, potective and caring human beings and at the same time we are so extremely violent.
Love hearing how far this man would go to even bring just a few cats home. I like him immediately for it.
Bonnie: Right, and when we watch him on the news talking about all the other stuff in Iraq it’s hard to imagine he’d write a piece like but but now I have a much more complex view of him. I’d never read his writing, only heard him talk but we’ve always liked him. Very smart and sensitive guy.
Yes, one does wonder what happens to domesticated cats or even feral cats in times of war. Well, best not think about it too much. Our cats have it made.
