Serrated Railing

Greenwich Village. New York is loaded with this stuff: seemingly decorative wrought iron the sole purpose of which is repelling humans or pigeons. It’s a well known fact that you can’t pee anywhere in New York and here we have proof that it’s tough to sit down as well.

Lovely photo, damn you. Possibilities from photos like this are making me consider diving back into SLR photography and splurging on a Canon 40D.
Great bokeh!
Thanks Mike and Gedas. He he Mike, if you dive back in, don’t forget to get yourself a very fast lens. This was shot at f/1.2 (although could have been shot at a smaller aperture with a longer lens).
The L-Series lenses are mostly out of my price range so I’ve been eyeing a 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM and 85mm f/1.8 USM combo.
You can make this shot with almost any lens Mike and the 85 f/1.8 would be a good choice as would any longer lens with a max aperture of f/4 or bigger. It could be made easily by a 135 f/2 or even a 300mm f/4.
My friend Gary made a similar shot of the same railing with a 35mm f/1.4 and the 50mm f/1.4 or 1.8 would do it as well. The key is a relatively fast lens and it’s hard to find those in zooms.
