More than six megapixels = Noise on a small sensor
The small sensors in compact digital cameras can only hold so many pixels before an artifact of crowding them in affects images: digital noise. Six megapixels is the limit for the small sensors in compact cameras.
One of the many reasons the Canon 5D and 1Ds cameras produce such noise-free images is that the pixels on their full-frame sensors are larger than most. However, there will no doubt be a limit to how much resolution one can get out of a 35mm sensor too, just like the smaller ones.
