Macworld Review: MacBook Air
Thursday, January 31st, 2008
There is no denying that the MacBook Air’s thinness makes it visually striking. But I’m not convinced of the utility of that thinness. Other than allowing Apple to declare the Air the current winner of the race to design the thinnest laptop, it seems that the Air has slimmed down in the least important dimension.
This is the piece that concerned me on seeing Jobs show it off and talk about it and after reading this article, if I were buying a new laptop in this category I’d go for a regular MacBook.
In the end, what they need is a repeat of the 12″ PowerBook (12″ MacBook Pro), maybe a tad thinner and lighter but with all the ports and all the power and a choice of flat or glossy screen.

Yes Richard, you right about repeat 12″ Powerbook ( I use this ) and now think to get Macbook Pro or Imac with big screen. I love my Powerbook, and I don’t want sell it to change in MB Pro, better I leave it to my girl. I think many people dreaming about MP Pro 12″ ;) And I don’t know why Steve not doing anything to make people happy.
Gedas: Hey may do that yet, we don’t know. I’m not sure I could make do with a 12″ screen after using this 15″ one. I think it would be tough. But, I do know that many people love that machine and if Apple made a modern version of it it would no doubt sell well.
I think you guys are missing the big picture. Any device that Apple makes is not just made for its own purpose but also as a path/experiment for the next thing. Case in point is the multi-touch track pad of the MacBook Air that has it’s root in the iPhone. I am sure that the reason Apple went with thin is because that’s an area they need to explore for future devices. Also, full-size keyboard and full-size screen is very important for many, many kinds of applications on the Mac. Apps expect and need more screen space today then when the 12″ PB was designed.
David, I agree and I think it will sell well, just not to me.
;)
I want an iPod Touch with more storage, that would float my boat. That and a new MacBook Pro 15″.
