Camera Comparison – Canon Powershot G9 vs Canon 5D
Sunday, June 22nd, 2008
A number of us are looking for a decent point and shoot camera that we can put in our pocket for times when we want to leave our heavy DSLR equipment at home. Up until recently, we had to forgo the flexibility of being able to shoot in RAW format when buying a camera like this but the G9 does support RAW and while many reviews have stated that G9 images at higher ISO settings are noisy, I’ve not seen a lot of evidence of that in images I’m seeing from the camera.
So, with that in mind, I found the review below an interesting read.
Camera Comparison – Canon Powershot G9 vs Canon 5D
Being somewhat of a photography nut, I recently set out to buy a second camera to carry around for those times when my Canon 5D and slew of lenses would be overkill. After doing a bit of research I settled on the Canon Powershot G9, and last week I finally picked one up. So far I’ve been very impressed with the camera, but I wanted to see how it would hold up against the 5D in an unscientific yet unbiased comparison. And the results were pretty surprising.
An interesting read and no, he’s not trying to make the point that the G9 makes the 5D look bad, just that it should be considered as a decent point and shoot alternative. I think he makes it well.
Oscar Colorado has an interesting review of the Canon G9 here: Canon PowerShot G9: Stealth Power Unleashed.
Here’s the Canon PowerShot G9 official Canon page and site.

Thanks for this Richard – a very good read. Spookily, the chap who wrote the article, Mike Solomon, is a guy I was in touch with a few months ago about some wordpress stuff! A small world :-)
Jon: Part of me would like to pull the trigger on this camera but part of me just thinks the XT and a cheap 50mm would be better. Bigger but certainly better quality images and it could use all of our good lenses.
Sigh, when in doubt, best to do nothing.
Richard: That’s my thinking too. I had the G9 for a week, and was very bothered by the noise at ISO 400 & above.
Gary, I’m so stuck on RAW if for nothing else, just to correct white balance, that I’d want a clean RAW file to work with. I think we’re better off with the XT or a newer version of it plus a cheap 50mm lens. That will be a small killer combo. I hope to get something like that at some point.
