Steep Rock Preserve Walk
Tuesday, June 24th, 2008
Washington, Connecticut. I took a walk in the Steep Rock Preserve today and found a new path that led me into a deep forest with a lot of blooming mountain laurel. It was cloudy as I started but just as I entered the densest part of the forest the sun broke through and lit up a small area.
My walk took me along a part of the Shepaug River I’ve not explored yet and my guess is on weekends this spot is coveted by fly fishermen (and women).

Hello Richard, great placem looks very quite. Let me ask you about 24mm, right now I bidding on two lenses (ebay) 24mm f2.8 and 28 f2.8, I want know your word about these brothers. I know you don’t like nikkor but you have much experience with lenses and mm. If I buy 24mm it coast me extra money, but these 4mm looks so short.
Gedas: I have no problem with Nikon and Nikor lenses or cameras, I just don’t use them. I’m happy with everything I see done with them though.
I don’t know the reputation of those lenses but given that you have a 1.6 crop body (you have a D70, right?) those will not be the focal lengths you’ll see through the viewfinder: it will be more like 40mm and 43mm, not very wide.
If the lenses were identical in every way, I’d go for the wider one (24mm) as it will only be marginally wider than 50mm on your camera.
I have D70s (and saving money for full frame) all this day I reading reviews about 24mm, I am so tied. Tomorrow I will reading about full frame, 1.6 crop, I feel like something miss about that. Thanks for help.
Gedas, I thought the D3 was currently the only full frame Nikon has and at some point they’ll come out with a D700 which will also be full frame. The D700 sounds like a great camera from the rumor sites.
The 5D is a great camera too and 24mm on a full frame camera is wide but not so wide that one gets distortion, it’s a great angle of view in my opinion and I’m quite happy with the 24 end of my 24-70 as my widest angle of view. I just rented a 17-40 and a 12-35 and while they were fun, I’m not sure how much I’d use them.
How much coast to rent lenses for you? It’s good thing to be able to rent before buying it. When we see your shots with 12-35mm?
I want before Christmas purchase one of full frame, I thinking about 5D, because D3 too expensive.
Gedas: I use http://www.lensrentals.com/. Excellent service and they’re nice people and have the right equipment.
I didn’t save any of the tests I did with the wide angle lenses.
If you wait a while on the 5D the new model will come out and the current one will maybe drop more. Of course, the risk is that it will just go off the market. You have some time…
