Starbucks gum

Warren, Connecticut. Another reason to shoot at larger apertures to blur the background is to blur a background seam, in this case the line where the white wall meets the white tabletop. That line gets blurred here because of the larger aperture. Back corners are usually dealt with by draping fabric or paper and I could have done that here but I like the reflection of the semi-gloss surface of the table and opening the aperture was an easy way to get rid of that line. I probably could have stopped down a bit to get more focus on the gum container’s turned lip but then the line would have become clearer. It’s a balance.
This was shot with the 5D but I’m playing around with the 50mm f/1.8 II lens on a rented Canon XTi as a small and less expensive camera to carry around as a high end point and shoot. The combo of XTi and this very small and light 50mm is just the thing for walks in the woods where one wants more than a point and shoot but not a whole pack of gear. I’ve been walking with it daily. Of course, having light gear doesn’t help one take nice photographs and not a single one of the images I’ve shot with this rig has been any good. No doubt I have to get used to it. Well, that theory makes me feel better anyway.
