Carl Zeiss lenses for Canon SLRs
Now Canon has another third party lens maker building lenses that will work on its EF lens mount.
Until now if a Canon user wanted to use infamous Zeiss lenses he had to use an adapter to get the lens to communicate with the camera through the EF lens mount. Adapters don’t always allow the camera to control all lens functions, for instance, auto focus doesn’t always work through an adapter. Of course, many Zeiss lenses are manual focus only so this isn’t an issue. But, this announcement seems to be saying that Zeiss has reverse engineered the mount and all EF functions will be supported on their lenses.
Like Sigma, Tamron, and Tokina, among others, Zeiss’ EF mount will allow its lenses to work on Canon film SLRs and digital SLRs.
The more third party lenses the merrier, but, be aware that there’s more to making a lens than great optics; the electronics (EF) have to work with Canon’s cameras and as our Canon DSLR Error 99 fix thread demonstrates, third party lenses can at times run into compatibility problems, especially when they’re years old being used on new Canon DSLR bodies.

yes and the price too.
Yep, Carl Zeiss is pretty damn expensive stuff. If its going to be more expensive than the “L” series, i think there is not much a point to sell them. I for sure would rather buy trust worthy and time tested “L” glass that has years of reputation and credibility compared to some newbie show piece.
Dilip: Zeiss optics aren’t “newbie showpieces,” trust me. I’d love to have their 50mm. But, I’m happy to have any high end new lenses. All of this equipment is so much beyond my skills to use it to it’s fullest I feel kind of arrogant even commenting about it.
Richard, don’t feel that way you know your stuff, I allways thinks of asking you when i am thinking about lens or photo stuff.
Edward, thanks. However, I stand by what I said. My skills and most everyone I know do not eclipse the high end equipment we’re using. It would take me years and years to grow my skills to outgrow even my lowest end lens.
yes but that is the beauty of it, there is always something new to learn and something different around the corner.
Edward: Amen brother. Life would be boring if it were different.
right it would be even the ups and down make it kind of exiting even thought right now this down is not all that fun.
