Canon Announces EOS 5D Mark II
Wednesday, September 17th, 2008
Canon has announced the much anticipated EOS 5D Mark II. This is the successor to the successful Canon EOS 5D (that I have and love) that has been long in the making. It will be out in November.
I’ve not had time to read much about the new camera yet but here’s what it looks like:
- 21.1 megapixels (full frame)
- $2699 retail price, US (similar to original 5D when it came out)
- Integrated Cleaning System (sensor cleaning)
- DIGIC 4 processor
- 14 bit images
- AF micro adjustment (for adjusting individual lenses on the camera)
- ISO 100 - 6400
- Live View
- HD movie recording in live view mode
- 3.9 frames per second in continuous shooting mode
- Lithium-Ion LP-E6 rechargeable battery (new)
Gizmodo has the announcement, press release and a bit more: Canon 5D Mark II Officially Awesome: 21MP DSLR First to Shoot Full HD Video
Dpreview has the announcement, press release and a bit more as well: Canon EOS 5D Mark II: 21MP and HD movies
Dpreview now has a hands-on preview: Canon EOS 5D Mark II Hands-on Preview

I have my sights on this one Richard. Just have to weigh the options.
One thing i’ve noticed in the past is that some events won’t let you bring a camera in if it has video capabilities.
Okay, i’m all ears and eyes now. I’ve not purchased any “L” glass for the sole purpose of upgrading to full frame. Its gonna be a matter of time before i decide if i go with this full frame upgrade, if canon has gotten it real good or jump ships and go with Nikon.
Question: Is 3.9 Fps in RAW (21.1 Megapixels) or is that JPEG?
3.9 FPS in JPEG. Looks like the D90 and D300 does 4.5 FPS.
But then Canon Records Full CD Stereo with the HD Movies, Nikon does broke ass mono! Lol!
Sorry for spamming ur blog with comments but i think im going nuts! Read this…
“the individual pixel dimensions of the EOS 5D Mark II camera are the same as the 21.1-megapixel CMOS sensor used in the EOS-1Ds Mark III digital SLR, the new sensor incorporates an improved output amplifier and a more advanced color filter that improves light transmission while retaining excellent color reproduction. By applying the same kind of advancements in sensor design and image processing technology as the recently introduced EOS 50D camera, but at higher resolution and with larger pixels, the EOS 5D Mark II achieves the highest level of image quality of any EOS Digital SLR released to date.”
I think, im sold already like 40%. Need to see images from this camera before i put the money on it.
Oh boy, Oh boy, Oh boy, Oh boy !!!! :D
So, Richard you like this canon step? What you thinking, buy D700 or this new body with Full HD!?
Greg: Wow, I never thought of that as a liability and it’s an interesting issue. At this point I’m not sure how useful HD video is for me but I would never rule it out. It can’t hurt and it’s not like the price is any different from the original 5D when it came out. I’ll wait for Phil’s review at DP Review. I find him quite accessible and readable.
Dilip: I don’t shoot continuous so the frame rate in RAW or jpg isn’t all that important to me. I’m concerned about the resolution and the auto focus and so I’ll be waiting for full and in depth reviews of the camera to see what the noise is like and to see if the AF is improved over the current 5D where it’s a problem.
Amazing how the flickr groups have gone nuts overnight over this. Everyone’s an instant expert on a camera they’ve never handled or taken pictures with.
Time will tell us a lot.
What i’m very concerned about is the 3.9 FPS. Frankly i think its a party pooper. When Nikon can shoot 4.5 FPS or 6FPS i see no reason why canon should not do it but then i guess i will just wait and watch while the camera’s come out and perform on the field.
I do a heck a lot of continuous shutter. I love it because especially when shooting portraits of women / kids, things change so rapidly and i cannot afford to miss them. Most of my well appreciated images on flickr are continuous shutter and i kind of learnt how to work with it well. One of the problems with my 400D currently is the slow processing with continuous shutter and of course, lack of speed. From the specs its quite disappointing that the 5D replacement does not even do a mere 4.5 or 6 FPS (which i expected) when the nikon counterparts can do it quite well.
I like this Jesse post on 5D group in flickr.
” Okay folks the new 5D is here and I for one am excited. Lets face it video mode is here, and it’s here to stay. Expect all the players to put it on there cameras. I wouldn’t be surprised if Niko undercuts the d3 and d700 soon with a video sporting model. If you don’t like it, don’t use it. I would have been happy with 12mp but 21mp is okay as long as the noise is acceptable. I’m looking forward to putting this bad boy on order! ”
It’s trut, I think the same, after couple month Nikon introduce new model with video mode. I think this not bad, that is your choice.
I’m cautiously awaiting this one, Richard. 21.1 megapixels is a huge leap from the 5D’s current 12.9, and I’m hoping that noise won’t be an issue. There’s minimal noise with the 5D across a broad range of ISO’s. The new 5D’s price, $2699 is $600 less than when the 5D was first released.
Dilip: Sounds like you should be in the market for a used 1D. That camera is all about continuous mode. The 5D was never about that and I’m glad that they didn’t put a lot of resources into giving it a faster frame rate. Not my cup of tea and I could care less what Nikon does. If you like Canon, get a 1D.
Gedas: The jury will be out until there are decent reviews (I just posted a preliminary review above) and we see what the noise situation is. I’m optimistic but like Gary, I have little need or want of 21 megapixels and will most likely be trying out sRAW for some of my shooting.
As Gary says, the price is right on this camera. They’re sure to sell a load of them. Of course, if this one starts selling really well the price on the current 5D will drop a lot and that will make it attractive as well.
Time will tell. I hope to know a lot more about this in mid-November.
Look at this. You may find this very interesting.
Dilip: That’s quite a review.
I might have to get me one of these.
