DP Review has a post of Canon’s statement on Canon 5D MK II problems.
Looks like for once I made the right choice in not being an early adopter of the newest version of my camera. I’m sure these problems will get worked out and I plan to buy this camera when they do.
hey! we will waiting your review about new camera.
Gedas: It will be a while before I review it, I don’t plan to get it until sometime next year. I did, however, pick up a Canon XSi recently as a backup camera to my 5D and it’s great fun to play with. When I have a bit more experience I’ll post a short review and add it to my gear list.
Richard,
I’m planing rent 5D II for this weekend, and i’m not found a post where you write your expierence with it…I know I read it where you talking about loudy shutter..
Gedas
Gedas: I never wrote it. Sorry.
I bought and sold the 5D2 the year it came out (last year) and while the camera is fantastic, I found the shutter/mirror sound loud and clunky enough so that I didn’t like it. My friend Gary had the same experience.
The IQ is as good as it gets and all the controls are great if one is already a Canon user. The camera is fantastic. It’s just that sound/vibration that bothers me.
To be fair, it’s no doubt because of the size of the mirror which on a full frame camera is bigger than on a cropped frame. Still, Nikon D700s have a full frame mirror and don’t make much noise at all.
Given that I’m a Canon guy I’ve considered both the 7D (1.6 crop) which has a very quiet shutter and the 1D Mark 4 which has a 1.3 crop but also has a very quiet shutter.
I’ve rented both of these cameras and they were great (use category/tags to find images from them) but cropped sensors will have an effect on my lenses and that gave me pause. Plus, I’m still getting good images out of my 5D so I’m in no huge rush to get a new camera.
And, as you know, I’m on the verge of getting a new computer.
As far as you renting the 5D2, it’s great and you should do it. But, of course, as a Nikon man, you’ll need to rent some lenses with it. Which ones will you get? Given the kinds of shooting you do I’d consider the 24-70mm f/2.8 L and the 70-200mm f/2.8 L. If you want primes consider the 35mm f/1.4 L, the 85mm f/1.2 L and the 135mm f/2 L.
I think 5D2 + 35mm f1.4, I have wedding this saturday and want try what it is have 35 1.4 on 5D. It’s amazing focal lenght, I have tamron 17-35 2.8 and like it on 35mm.
Yes I’m Nikon man, I have D700 it’s amazing, I want 35mm, nikon announced it but price is 1800USD. For 2200 I almost can get old 5D + 35mm 1.4 on ebay. That it.
Gedas: Another way to go if you don’t need the speed is the 24-70 or the 16-35 which both include the 35mm angle of view. Both are amazingly useful lenses, very sharp and excellent color. I use the 24-70 more than any single lens in my collection and I have the 35L as well.
Let me know what you think of the 5D2, I’ll be curious.
Richard, How’s that XSi working for you? I still enjoy mine very much, though I admit to using it less, thanks to getting surprisingly good images out of my iPhone 4′s camera. I’m using it more as a backup to the 5D and the XSi. It’s limited, but fun to use, and so very lightweight!
Gary: as you know (but must have forgotten), I haven’t had an XSi for years. I had one in 2008 when I posted this but that was a while ago.
Richard, oh yes, I remembered that you had one, but thought you might have gotten one again for a 5D backup. Of course, you don’t need it, since you’ve got a great and very compact CanonS90.
