Carleton Watkins at the Getty

Los Angeles, California. The Getty Center has a spectacular show of the photography of Carleton Watkins up until the end of the month: Dialog Among The Giants: Carleton Watkins.
Any landscape photographer who lives within driving distance of LA needs to see this important photography show. It is simply one of the best photo shows I’ve seen in years. It’s deep, large, and well curated.
I was pushing my 93 year old mother around in a wheelchair and describing photographs and reading placards so I didn’t see it under the best circumstances. Still, this is one of the best shows of his work you’ll ever see.
They even have his enormous view camera on display. The rig is the size of a small car. You look at that camera rig and then at the pictures and consider him schlepping that thing around Yosemite and the western US and moaning about carrying a tripod sort of sounds ridiculous.

Great stuff – Watkins made his way up the coast to the Portland Oregon area – here is a page of photos http://www.carletonwatkins.org/list-page12.htm
Thanks!
Steve: Right, he took a number of shots of mills in none other then Oregon City, a town I think you know well ;).
