Photos from the Farm Security Administration in the 1930s and 40s
A wonderful collection of images that give a clear view of what life was like during a previous severe economic downturn. Wow.

These are some great images. One thing to note is how a good deal of the photos look like they were taken yesterday, technically speaking in terms of the photography. Apparently this was around the same time Kodachrome was released.
in the comment thread of the linked article, someone mentioned a book “Bound for Glory: America in Color 1939-43″ http://is.gd/mU2R, looks like a great photo book to add to a collection (I’ll be ordering one myself).
Joe: Thanks for the notes and link. I just ordered it too and the others that came up on amazon after buying it look great too (although quite expensive). Thanks.
great photos. the color reminds me of “technicolor” from the films of that era.
I stared longest at that unbelievable table of cakes from the New Mexico fair…
Sheryl: I think the color in movie film and this early Kodachrome might be the same. Or, better said, that early movie film was no doubt made by Kodak. I looked hard at the first picture of the family. They were timeless in a way, yet showed the stress of the time they were living in.
