In Search of Safety Net, Freelancers Form Union (story on The NewsHour)
A former labor lawyer has organized freelancers into a union that offers affordable health insurance and other benefits.
The coverage isn’t quite what my wife gets at her school but this group gets decent rates and it’s worth looking into. We saw this story on The NewsHour last week and I’ve been meaning to look deeper into it.
I just checked that out two weeks ago Richard and it’s not bad. I ended up going through AIGA though and got a decent HSA package at a (cough) decent rate.
Greg: Good to know. This piece and group really got me excited though, might be useful to join even if one has insurance elsewhere. I’m still exploring their site to see what they’re about.
The Freelancers Union is free membership (unless I read it wrong). Definitely can’t hurt to have multiple memberships. I have to add that I did NOT have to join AIGA to get the insurance rates. All I had to do was call the number on the AIGA site and mention where I found out about it.
I love this idea, and I would join by virtue of the logo and the posters alone… I know so many freelancers who might be interested.
Thank you
Sheryl: Right, my thoughts exactly.
