Canon releases new PowerShot cameras
Everything with a “new” over it was just released. Make special note of the G11 and S90. These two are very interesting cameras.
Note that the G10 has a 15 megapixel sensor and the newer G11 has a 10.4 megapixel sensor. Canon may have gotten the message that they were adding resolution at the expense of noise on these small sensors. The S90 has the same 10.4 megapixels as the G11 as well as many advanced features including a lens that at its widest zoom 35mm can open up to f/2.0. This is very fast for a camera like this and will make it quite useful for creative control of depth of field.
Hopefully some of this reduction in resolution will be carried over to new versions of Canon’s DSLRs.
There are reviews of all of these cameras popping up all over including at Digital Photography Review.
This is exciting news in the world of compact cameras. Finally, Canon places less emphasis on megapixels, and offers two cameras that feature raw, and offer 28mm at the wide end. The lens control ring on the S90 sounds good too. I’m really looking forward to trying them out.
Me too Gary, and I’m not waiting until you get back here so we can do it together at B&H even though I’d like to.
Only 10 megapixel? They could have done better than that.
Technology Slice: Actually, I’m delighted with the move down to 10 megapixels. The problem with their G10 was too many pixels on too small a sensor and too much noise. It seems they are now following Nikon’s lead and letting go of resolution for marketing purposes in favor of image quality.
