Looking upstream on the Shepaug from Hauser Bridge
Sunday, August 23rd, 2009
Washington, Connecticut. This was shot in early morning from a swinging suspension bridge, handheld with a 1.3 second exposure so things aren’t very sharp here.
All of that said, the river and air were calm in the early morning and there was quite a bit of ground fog because of heavy rain the night before. It was a scene worth attempting to photograph, even sans-tripod.
Early morning is a great time to be out shooting if one can actually get up and make it happen. Those who do this know that once you’re out there you forget how difficult it was to get up and out the door.

You’re inspiring me to get my booty out the door Richard. Morning IS my time.
I haven’t done any serious shooting at all this summer but with my recent relocation to Charlotte I can’t wait to get out and shoot some of this great landscape. The skys here are fantastic at sunset and sunrise.
At first glance, I thought you might have shot that from your kayak. Shooting that on a swinging bridge is even more impressive.
Nice one, Richard. I completely agree with your last paragraph in the post. I need to do more of it too. It’s my favorite time for landscape photography.
Dale: I know you do and you have the images to prove it.
Greg: Wow, I had no idea you’d moved to NC. Congrats (I hope).
I like morning a lot but not the idea of rushing through the coffee to get outside. I prefer sipping coffee while slowing going through the RSS feed. I suppose one could do both on this bridge but maybe the digital life is better left behind at times like this (except for the camera).
Thanks Richard; and congrats are fine. We just wanted a change of scenery and a little warmer climate.
I agree, coffee and rss seem to go together well. I usually take a large thermal mug with me in the mornings when I shoot which half way covers it. However, there’s great gratification in getting back with a sd card full of images before the rest of the world wakes.
Richard, that’s a beautiful image of a stunning place that I’ve been very fortunate to be at with you. More inspiration for us to get up very early, and head for the river with our cameras! Sipping coffee on the way over too.
Great to be there with you Gary, that was a very productive morning, shots or no shots.
Greg: I agree and if I had my act together I’d be out in that same place tomorrow morning. Given that it’s 12:17 am and I’m still up, I don’t think that’s gonna happen, tomorrow anyway.
