Canon announces new 100mm f/2.8 macro lens
Tuesday, September 1st, 2009
Canon announced the EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM which is the lens of my dreams. They haven’t dropped their older, less expensive 100mm macro, just added this $1049 higher end “L” lens to the lineup.
Besides being better built than it’s lower priced cousin this lens has image stabilization (IS) which will allow it to be used more than it’s cousin without a tripod.
This lens is absolutely on my radar and it will be released in October. Wow.
I’m more interested in the 7D camera with the built in “Flash Master” a direct answer to Nikon’s CLS based flash system.
If only this camera was a Full Frame Camera, i think canon and nikon will equal the Flash System platform. This would be fantastic news for people who want to learn artificial lighting without having to blow big bucks for remote triggers/slaves/commanders. :)
Another visit to your wish list on the B&H site Richard! I’m sure you will make great use of it!
This is great. I had been watching the discussions about the 7D prior to the official announcement, but this caught me by total surprise. This should be a very useful addition to the kit.
@Dale: Just checked the canon website. Looks like the 7D is a cropped body. I will wait for the same features to carry over to a newer full frame camera next year. I’m hell bent on going full frame since i tend to be in situations where wide angle is a dire necessity (weddings, dance concerts, friends/day out) and the crop factor is a big hurdle for me.
I’m having a tough time moving my butt as my arthritis pain keeps increasing everyday so i think i should get the full frame body and a very wide lens like the 16-35 F/2.8 L USM II. I can only wish these 7D features will be CTRL + C -> CTRL + V’d on to a future full frame camera :P
B&H is now listing the lens although no pricing yet: EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM.
