Hiking Bear Mountain
Wednesday, October 14th, 2009
Just north of Bear Mountain on the Appalachian Trail we descended into Sage’s Ravine, a beautiful little canyon with a stream and waterfalls.
Note, we have a new member of our hiking party, my wife Anne who did amazingly well her first time out on this strenuous eight mile hike.
We were pretty wiped out on our way down after a long hike up and around Bear Mountain on a beautiful fall day.
I washed down some ibuprofen with a Sierra Nevada Torpedo immediately upon arriving home.

what are you guys doing sunday??
Sheryl: I think Anne may be going down to Cheshire to help out Bonnie but I might be free. What did you have in mind?
the Lion’s head/Bear MOuntain hike last weekend was so stunning and so much fun that I thought I’d do it again. This time with some food and a few friends.
Weather permitting of course. Let’s stay in touch!

Sheryl: I’m in. Let me know.
Hi richard–
I had to make an executive decision about tomorrow because people neeede to know if the hike was happening or not. Based on the weather forecasts (I use WAMC public radio, it is very relieable), they are calling for lots of rain on sunday.
Therefore, I have called off the hike. The trail, as you know, is full of leaves, pine straw and acorns, all of which would add up to slick conditions if very wet.
In other words, I am a wuss, and will keep you posted.

Sheryl: I beat you to your executive decision. I saw the weather would be tough on Sunday so Dave and I did Bear Mountain today. If you want me to call you for these “last minute hikes” let me know and I will.
You’re right, the trail is very “leafy” and wet it might be tough for some to walk on. Today was quite nice actually although I get wet with sweat on the hike up and if I didn’t change my shirt (I did) I’d freeze.
I like your after-hike cocktail! I’m not quite so hardcore, but I’ve been known to knock back a Pepsi (a bit of a treat for me) after a strenuous bike ride or digging session in the garden! Gotta get that sugar back up somehow!
Sarah: Pepsi! Gad. Maybe rum’n pepsi for cocktail hour, which reminds me, it’s that time again…
