Canon G11 vari-angle LCD screen

Warren, Connecticut. Just playing around with a new Canon Powershot G11 I bought for taking snapshots while hiking and already I like the articulated LCD screen for low angle shots or for using a table top tripod like this in the field for group portraits. Setting them up with my wife’s Canon SD1200 Elph was tough, this will be a lot easier.
I have yet to test the G11 out on hikes yet, maybe tomorrow but so far I like it, feels like a nice camera and is easy to use and easy to hold and shoot with.
The camera is zoomed out to 28mm, the wide end of its zoom range. Not bad coverage, that little Bogen table top tripod is close!
Note: this was taken with a rented Canon 7D which is also a very nice camera. I’m sticking with my 5D for sure but I wanted to see how some of the new features like improved auto focus worked in this camera. They work very well indeed.

Very nice Richard! And congrats for the G11. Vari-angle really has its use in this kind of shots. I think I have to look G11 again if it could suit also for my shooting habits.
Jonne: Can’t say all that much about G11 image quality yet but ergonomics are first rate. I’ll take it outside soon (tomorrow at the latest).
Great! I am very keen to hear your comments. I am also interested in how it will cope with high ISO situations because I would like to use natural light indoors too.
I’m taking the G11 and 5D2 to a concert tonight. Let’s see how it does in low light there.
Oh man, that sounds great. Thanks a lot in advance.
I did a bit of shooting with the G11 before the concert started, nothing special but it puts out an auto focus beam (maybe I need to turn that off) and it’s like flash so I didn’t want to use it during the concert. Used 5D2 instead… Hike today, more testing.
Hi Richard, I was going to get an S90 for use when climbing and hill walking, but found it quite awkward to hold when I tried it out in the shop. The G11 on the other hand feels really comfortable in the hand and I imagine would be much easier to operate with gloves on.
It’s so much bulkier and heavier than the S90 though – I still haven’t made my mind up!
Chris: I’ve just finished a 12 mile hike with the G11 and I’ll post pictures and my first impression but to cut to the chase, it worked very well and solves the too small problem of the S90. It has other ergonomic issues but none are deal breakers and the articulated LCD is really useful in the field. Stay tuned, I’ll post pictures soon.
I seen first ti,e this vari angle LCD it look very nice and attractive.Thank you for this post it has very useful information. This article contain some meaningful information.please keep posting like this with this useful information
how was the 7Dand how are the new features?
Edward: I’ve decided that my good old 5D will do the trick for me for the foreseeable future. The 7D is an amazing camera but I think your 40D is as well. I’d recommend continuing to hone photographic skills, buy lenses as needed and enjoy current gear.
