View from Steep Rock

Washington, Connecticut. Looking down at the Shepaug River from Steep Rock. David, Loren and I did an eight mile hike in Steep Rock the other day just to revisit the place that got us started hiking. Great day, lots of nice scenery and it was quite cold. Still, nothing like today where the high here is 15 F and with windchill well below 0.

Richard, that’s a fine winter view of a stunning place. Looking forward to going up there with you again (when it’s warmer!).
Gary: I have other things in mind for you when you come back. You’ve been to this place too many times. But, if you insist… we can surely get here as well.
The view over the oxbow is worth the walk at any time of year, as is pretty much any spot in the preserve, such as the bend in the Shepaug where I used to watch a blue heron fish (and perch in trees that I wouldn’t have thought would hold its weight) and once recovered a fully intact (and feathered) wing — all that remained of a wild turkey. It’s a fabulous spot.
I agree Johnny and I need to get back there. I’ve been doing a lot of hiking on the Appalachian Trail, in the Catskills, and on the Taconic trail and I’ve not been back to Steep Rock (any of the three preserves) in quite some time. Your comment here is a nice reminder to go visit it again. Maybe tomorrow afternoon. Thanks.
