Chet: That's probably the same notes app that runs on the phone. I've not used it much so I don't know what it's output is but my guess is it will sync with iTunes and produce text files you can retrieve on your computer. I doubt they'll be proprietary in format.

Whether or not the iPad will be able to send text out via cable like the AlphaSmart I have no idea since it doesn't have the ports to do that. It's built for wireless communication.

Dig around a bit more here and you may find the information you're looking for:

Chet: Yes, the iPad will use a version of Pages that can save text in a variety of formats. I think those other features will be more than bonuses after a while...

If I were getting an iPad as a high end AlphaSmart Neo I'd be sure to get the physical keyboard dock accessory along with it.

Richard

When I saw this picture (http://images.apple.com/ipad/specs/images/case_5_20100127.png), I was immediately reminded of the AlphaSmart Neo. The iPad could be the Neo with wifi!

I am thinking of getting one, and will use it like a Neo - the other iPad features would be bonuses.

Do you know if the iPad's Notes feature saves as plain text and can be exported?
