Apple iPhone 4S Siri demo
Tuesday, October 4th, 2011
Today Apple released the new iPhone 4S which looks similar to the iPhone 4 on the outside but has a new processor, antennae, and more. It will be running the new iOS 5 which will also run on iPhone 4s and 3GS models.
I didn’t see or track today’s big announcement from Tim Cook at Apple but it seems to me that the new iPhone 4S’s power will be essential for running the Siri Assistant. I can’t wait to use Siri, it looks fantastic.
Here’s Apple’s page for Siri.
Note that Siri isn’t just about control, it also does dictation. This is extremely meaningful to the disabilities community as well as those of us who find the iPhone’s on screen keyboard tough. I can’t wait for Siri to move onto the iPad and Mac OSX.
Richard, I was going to write something about my not getting a new iPhone anytime soon (I’m very satisfied with my iPhone 4)…just because of Siri…..and then I watched the video. Oy. If it works as well as they show it, holy crap, that’s gonna grab a whole lot of attention including mine eventually.
Would love to see that on an iPad as well.
What did you think of the improvements of the camera on the Iphone?
On this iPhone model comparison page it clearly shows that Siri is only available on the iPhone 4S.

I have “basic” Siri on iPad and it’s pretty cool! The “advanced” Siri is integrated within ios5 to make it much more usable. In fact, when I asked iPad Siri today who she was, she said a “newer and better looking” assistant will be available on October 14th on the new iPhone4S and she would be going “home”…
I am waiting iPhone 5. Maybe Siri understands Finnish then. I do not much like these in-between models. They do not have big changes (for my kind of mobile phone use anyways) and I feel they are mainly introduced because of marketing reasons.
Sandy: No matter how much the camera is improved, there are certain things I’ll use my Canon S95 or hopefully S100 for on hikes and of course, my larger more capable DSLR kit for as well. “Real” cameras have exposure controls and other things the iPhone camera currently doesn’t have.
So, how good the camera gets may eat into the point and shoot world but I don’t see it affecting my more professional photo work. I do think it’s improved on the 4S but I won’t upgrade until my contract runs out. For me, Siri is the reason to upgrade, plain and simple. And, it will continue to get better and better and hopefully spread to other devices.
Steve: Noted, thanks. No doubt Siri needs the dual core A5 processor to work and until other tools have that much power (and maybe memory) it will remain an iPhone only app.
Keith: I was poking around the app store and couldn’t find any versions of Siri. Can you point me to it, I’d love to try even a basic version on the iPad. Thanks.
Jonne: I think you’re wrong about this. Siri Assistant is a very large update and so is iOS 5 which will of course run on our iPhone 4 models. If my contract were up I’d get an iPhone 4S in a heartbeat just because of Siri which will no doubt take some training. I can’t wait to use it, it’s exactly what I want in my iPhone.
This is most definitely not just a marketing thing or introducing a new model just to introduce a new model; the improvements to an already great iPhone are meaningful and again, Siri is a game changer and as I said above, it needs the new more powerful processor to work.

i got iphone4s today, but i couldn’t find sir, and whenever i hold the home key, it turned out to be voice control!!! Help!!!
Nina, I don’t have the iPhone 4S yet but I’m guessing that either Siri needs to be set up before use or there’s a simple step you’re missing.
Check the Settings for a way to turn Siri on and off, maybe there’s a “switch” there.
