PROTECT IP / SOPA Breaks The Internet from Fight for the Future on Vimeo.
There’s no doubt piracy is wrong but having Congress, many of whom still think the internet is a “series of tubes” design laws to protect copyrighted material maybe isn’t the best way to go about stopping it.

this bill is scandalous, and lets just hope it dosent pass….. and yes Pirary is wrong and something should be done against that but I am not sure that governmental control is the answer.
I’m happy to see some progress in thwarting this terrible legislation, but the pressure must remain on those messing things up in Washington. Congressman Darrell Issa (R) and Senator Ron Wyden (D) have been doing a great job, but we need more of the elected officials to see that what they are doing is harmful. As they pander to lobbyists, they’re deaf to our protests, so it’s important to let them know that we’re serious about defeating SOPA/PIPA and will demonstrate that at the poles.
I’ve blacked-out my sites and most of those I administer today, though that’s mostly as a symbol of support to those who have real traffic, are meeting face-to-face with those in Washington to stop this, etc.
Ignorance makes for poor leadership decisions, and on this topic that’s what we have in Washington.
Edward: On this we agree. Let’s stop intellectual property theft but in a way that doesn’t penalize the wrong people.
Dale: I have mixed feelings about joining the site blackout thing. While I agree this is crappy legislation, I don’t want to associate with people who don’t acknowledge that intellectual property theft is wrong and needs to stop.
There no doubt is a middle ground but frankly I don’t want that middle ground to include the use of my photographs in someone else’s art that they sell and make money from. Many who are taking part in this blackout don’t feel that way; they believe Shepard Fairey was entitled to use his Obama photograph without acknowledging the person who took it. We need to crack down on that stuff. I don’t trust congress to write the laws that do it but I do think it needs to be done.
Richard: of course I agree with regard to maintaining copyrights, but I’m content to do whatever small thing I can do to help strike these bills down. If the next attempts satisfy those who would have us give up our rights, I will speak out against them as well. As I mentioned on my blog (and elsewhere many times) I am absolutely against copyright infringement and have no respect for bit torrents (such as music sharing services) or similar, and feel there is no gray area there. I understand your point regarding certain individuals who protest SOPA/PIPA but feel some creative materials should be free for them to exploit and completely agree with you. I’m squarely against that “entitlement” point-of-view.
well I think that should be done is stronger copyright law not stronger online laws. this bill is bad. I think that online and offline copyright laws are the issues…
