OS X Mountain Lion tour

I’m using the beta of Messages (demoed in the video) and its great. Looks like the rest of it is great too.
The new Notes app looks like it might be the end of Simplenote…. not sure yet but it looks likely.
Here’s some more on the new features:

Wow.
Look forward to these updates. now if they just updated there tower i would be a happy camper.
Don’t hold your breath Edward… it sure seems like they’re downsizing support for the “pro” user these days.
ha yes I know but i am staying hopeful :)
Well, although Messages beta works on my MacPro right now (2006 model!), it looks like ML won’t…
Six years is a great run for the beast, but it could mean a new machine in the next 12 months. Saying that, it runs Lion flawlessly so will still use it. Perhaps in a new office setup for Kate.
Jon: Right, no need to toss the machine, you can always use it as a local server for media and backups forever (well, until some piece of it dies).
I trully hope that apple will come out with a new mac pro it is a segment of users that they should not let go. it would be a mistake
Edward: it seems like they’re in the process of letting go of that segment right now. Hard to say though, we’ll know in the next 6 months or so.
When you look at where most of their money comes from our dwindling segment (pro users) is tiny and getting smaller all the time.
yes I agree but I think it is a segment that is dwindling because they have not been updating the machines in that segment and if (hopefully when) they do the demand will jump.
if you are a pro user and you want a pro machine and they do not upgrade it then you have to look at another company for hardware, and that is not a good solution, imagine that you are dealing with a farm of Iphone what will large companies use to manage that?
and yes the next 6 month will tell, actually I believe that they will come out with something before the summer or a statement saying they are out of that segment.
Edward: I disagree. Many pro users have moved happily to the iMac (high end model) and many of the bloggers and photographers you follow use portable computers and have been for years. They might connect them to a large monitor but their hardware is the same as yours and mine.
What’s made at least some of this possible is the move to the cloud. Now that it’s easy to keep many devices in sync everything but the largest files can live in the cloud and those files can live on an external hard disk if necessary.
No doubt some folks want a tower and bays and the like but at some point that group will get small enough so that it won’t pay for Apple to make something specifically aimed at them.
If I were Apple I’d make the Mac Mini a stackable tower…
Well yes the imac is pretty good and has great power but does not have the flexibility of macPro for example I have 4 internal Hard drive (that are supper fast) and 2 screen. if want a second video card i open the box and plug it in, you cannot do that on an Imac.
I still think that their is a place for the macpro but time will tell and i am keeping my fingers crosses. I think that we wont agree on this one ;) and that is ok, because I think your right most people think like you.
The iMac supports a second screen and thunderbolt support chaining drives… just not in the same way. Many folks are quite happy with this solution. I’m not defending it, just saying that it may be that there’s not enough market for the older big box.
