Ice layers and bubbles

On the Appalachian Trail between Hubbard Brook and Rt. 7 near Sheffield, Massachusetts.
This was the finest collection of ice patterns I’d ever seen in my many years of looking for and shooting them. This was a shallow swamp right on the trail with a small crumbling bridge/boardwalk running through it.
On either side of the boardwalk was a different collection of ice patterns. I went nuts shooting, then Dave found the ice bubbles and yelled out.
We could have spent much of the day at this spot and if I’d had, say, a full frame camera like the Sony RX1 or any easy to use camera I’d have shot even more.
As it was, going from the 100 or so images I took down to the nine I’m posting here has taken me weeks of comparing.
I can’t wait to get home to print some of these.

Really nice set! Beautiful.
Thanks Andrew, it was exciting to discover so much good stuff on a single hike.
Great collection, Richard. All very nice, but I especially like the top one. It reminds me of S.E.M. (Scanning Electronic Microscope) images. And the ice bubbles remind me of S.E.M. images of opal structure, which is comprised of a latticework of silica spheres.
Dale: Thanks, I appreciate you taking the time to look and comment. I agree, the treatment gives them a microscopic look, like thin sections of minerals. Images like these get me excited about photography (again). It’s nice to have some focus (pun intended).
What a superb set, Richard. I can hardly wait to see some of these superlative images in the prints and notecards that I know you’re eager to make. Spectacular!
Thanks Gary. It will be interesting to see if what we like here translates to larger prints. It doesn’t always work out that it does. But I’m guessing at least a few of these will print well.
I’m still working on a new size for my prints, mats, and frames. Not white sure yet but no doubt somewhat smaller than the 15″x15″ print size I did for the Getty show.
Beautiful images and such clarity. Fine work. I love the first one and the the polka dots, too. Great stuff.
Thanks Scott. I’m home from LA now so I’ll be attempting some prints of these in the next few days.
Richard, I think this is the best set so far looking forward to seeing more.
Thanks Edward, I’m pleased with it as well. I have some new photo papers now and will be printing some tests today. Stay tuned.
