Kids and iPads

Flickr member Lars.Jeppesen has taken a great image of two kids using iPads with his Sony RX1. I love the square framing and border. Very intimate shot.

Love it. “Intimate” – nice way of describing it. Leave it to the kids to show how each can be in their own separate experience and yet, foot on calf, connects.
Sandy: The thing that pulls this image together (IMHO) is the square cropping and border. It’s like they’re in a box. My guess is the original shot had a different feel. The great thing about having so much resolution is you can crop and still get a decent shot.
Richard, I get that…to the extent that essentially a non-photographer can. There’s a lot to enjoy about this photo and perhaps as you say, the cropping and border brings it all together. Still, border without content? Nah. including the textures and swirls, combined with the leg touch gives this something extra for me.
Sandy: The content was there in the original shot (which was either a 2×3 vertical rectangle or a 3×2 horizontal one. What Lars did was crop it in just the right place and add the border pulling it all together. All the details were there in the original shot but a frame can focus one’s eyes in the right place.
Yup. I get it. I’m stuck on the other parts I mentioned but I get it. Without the cropping and bordering, it’s not the same. Would love to see a side by side.
Sandy: One thing (some) photographers learn as they go through the process many times is to pre-visualize stuff like this. I’m not saying Lars knew this would be the final image although he’s an experienced enough photographer that he might have, but now that many cameras have enough resolution so that one can crop easily without losing much image quality, getting the framing just right in the camera is less important.
