Kitty and Richard

Our friend Gary is visiting and took this picture. The Kitty is getting very old and fragile and is shedding like mad for some reason but she’s still kicking at 18 and a half.

Nuthatch with seed

Warren, Connecticut. Nuthatches are my favorites of the birds on our feeders. They’re the only bird that can walk straight down a tree although like woodpeckers, they’re insect eaters as well as seed eaters. You can see how awkward this dude is on the feeder perch, his claws are really grasping to stay on. This [...]

Warren, Connecticut. I always wondered how these birds can get enough purchase on a round peg to hold themselves up given that their little feet and claws aren’t built for this kind of perch. Some can but others feel the need to hold on elsewhere so they can pig out with abandon. Note: This is [...]

Nuthatch taking off

Warren, Connecticut. This feeder is on the north side of our house and it’s tough to shoot given its proximity to the sun’s arc. However, I was able to get a few interesting shots including this one of a nuthatch who, upon landing immediately took off when she saw me. I love her little feet [...]

Chickadee with seed

Warren, Connecticut. More than any of the other birds on our feeders chickadees seem to have little problem with me standing ten feet away taking pictures. I suppose food trumps fear when the nights are getting colder and winter approaches. Note: This is an extreme crop as a test of the Canon EF 200mm f/2.8 [...]

Chickadee with seed

Warren, Connecticut. As the temperature drops the songbirds on our feeders eat more and the more they eat the more often I have to fill the feeders. My wife thinks the birds put hobo signs on our house: "humans keep feeders full here, empty fast for fresh seed."

Warren, Connecticut. This is just a quick test of my 135mm f/2 L lens with my 1.4x extender which makes the resulting combination 189mm with a max aperture of f/2.8. I’m considering the Canon 200mm f/2.8 L lens and wanted to see if what I have already with this combo might do the job. Alex [...]

Early morning light

Warren, Connecticut. The sun is coming up behind me and lighting up the trees behind our small pond. It’s cold out and we have a fire burning this morning. These clouds are the preface of supposed rain later today. I love fall but it’s a heck of a lot of work: leaves, firewood, garden to [...]

Chickadee with seed

Warren, Connecticut. I decided to see if I could stand six feet away from this tube feeder for long enough for birds to ignore me and come in and eat. It took two minutes for this chickadee to swoop in and pick up a seed.

Daisy turbine

Warren, Connecticut. I feel like this daisy looks: wilted in the humidity. It’s hard to find the energy to get out and shoot when the dog days come, and it’s not even August yet.

Warren, Connecticut. So, could the Canon EF 180mm f/3.5 L macro lens be used as a general purpose telephoto? Yes.

It’s alive!

Warren, Connecticut. Another gerber daisy, this one pink. Yeah, I know, enough already with these weird flowers. We bought six plants though, all different colors, so I have to document them, right?

Warren, Connecticut. Two things that took me too long to learn about photography: overcast days can make for better color saturation and easier exposure setups, and flowers going by can be as interesting as flowers at their peak. I’m still using a rented Canon EF 180mm f/3.5 L macro lens and enjoying it.

Does anyone with an education reading this actually believe that Obama is a muslim? Better yet, does anyone with an education reading this believe it would be a problem (for you) if Obama was of the Muslim faith? People without an education don’t have the tools to filter out the noise and don’t have the [...]

Warren, Connecticut. My wife Anne loves babies and knits and that combination has led to countless sweaters, vests, bonnets, hats, scarves, blankets and more, all hand made with love (including cat hair). There’s nothing wrong with buying gifts and we do it more than not, but a hand-made gift that took some time, skill, thought, [...]

The Kitty turned 18 today

Warren, Connecticut. Our wonderful old cat had her eighteenth birthday today. She’s quite arthritic and has a tough time getting around these days but she does have her moments and we do our best to keep her happy. The Kitty was born a month before I met Anne and has been with us through three [...]

Let it snow!

Warren, Connecticut. Opened slider to shoot, cat ran out, took shot, put camera down, chased cat around backyard in snow, got soaked, came in, had enough. Going to bed.

Kitty, Gary, Anne

Warren, Connecticut. I know, this is not a great image but I like it anyway. I was trying out Gary’s Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L USM lens and even though the light in the room made this a tough exposure (for me), it demonstrates what’s so interesting about shooting with a fast wide angle lens (subject [...]

Warren, Connecticut. We bought these prayer flags at a Tibet festival over the summer. "Traditionally, prayer flags are used to promote peace, compassion, strength, and wisdom." I can’t speak for any of you but we here in the US need to be hanging a lot of these prayer flags. I don’t think we could hang [...]
