Warren, Connecticut. I just can’t resist coneflowers (echinacea), they’re so dramatic, colorful, photogenic. I wonder what makes a flower photogenic, or, better, I wonder if the same things that attract us to flowers also attract bees and other insects? If I were a bee, I’d be all over these stamen.

Pasadena, California. I guess high summer is not the best time to photograph the herb garden at the Huntington Library and Garden. Most of my favorite plants had gone by or were wilted in the heat. Of course, I have an eye for flowers in decay and tried to make the most out of it [...]

Danbury, Connecticut. I was down at Danbury Airport taking pictures of the initial setup of the biggest fireworks show in Connecticut. I’ll be shooting the rest of the set up and the show tomorrow all day and into the night. Took a break from watching the construction of the rocket firing tubes to shoot some [...]

Warren, Connecticut. I feel like this daisy looks: wilted in the humidity. It’s hard to find the energy to get out and shoot when the dog days come, and it’s not even August yet.

Warren, Connecticut. We just had a very fast and violent thunderstorm, poured rain with lightning and thunder for a half hour, then it was over as fast as it started. Everything’s soaked, dripping and steamy and I’m thinking flowers and water droplets. The good news is, now lawn mowing today. Yes!

Warren, Connecticut. I spent an hour photographing beautiful, perfect dogwood blooms and then I ran across this old one going by. Some might say that young, beautiful flowers are the thing, but give me old flowers going by, they have character and are much more interesting to photograph.

New Preston, Connecticut. We were early for yoga class this morning and next door to the building the class is held in is a small herb garden. Anne rolled her eyes and groaned when I broke out the macro gear to see about a picture of this lavender plant before class started. I didn’t know [...]

Washington, Connecticut, Macricostas Preserve. This little flower is about one half in across (this is not a daisy) and after going to all the trouble to set up the tripod and get things lined up, an intruder dropped in. I figured he’d leave soon enough but he stayed for twenty minutes so I gave up, [...]

Washington, Connecticut, Macricostas Preserve. This is one stalk of grass from this field. I was on the edge of the field today attempting to take pictures of bugs and thought the grass looked just as good.

Warren, Connecticut. Another gerber daisy, this one pink. Yeah, I know, enough already with these weird flowers. We bought six plants though, all different colors, so I have to document them, right?

Warren, Connecticut. Another of our recently acquired gerber daisies open in the sun. The petals and stamen on these flowers are so photogenic I can’t stop shooting them. I know, enough already with the gerber daisies.

Warren, Connecticut. Two things that took me too long to learn about photography: overcast days can make for better color saturation and easier exposure setups, and flowers going by can be as interesting as flowers at their peak. I’m still using a rented Canon EF 180mm f/3.5 L macro lens and enjoying it.

Warren, Connecticut. We just got back from our friend Nora’s nursery and I picked up a bunch of photogenic gerber daisies. This must be the year of the daisy for me. This one has a few buds that are just opening up, very nice petals from all sides.

Warren, Connecticut. I rented the Canon 180mm f/3.5 L macro lens for a week and I have to say, it’s quite a nice lens for these types of shots. The longer (than 100mm) focal length makes for nice compression and the lens makes nice colors and beautiful bokeh. It’s a beast though so one really [...]

Warren, Connecticut. Suffice to say that I did not get under this daisy with a 300mm lens and shoot up, it was bent over so I had an opportunity to shoot the beautiful underside of it from the side.

Warren, Connecticut. The problem with shooting blooms on trees is that even on a dwarf tree the blooms can be high enough so it’s difficult to shoot down on them without having a tripod that can get your camera higher and for me (5 feet 6 inches) a small step ladder. I have the tripod [...]

Warren, Connecticut. My friend Zarinna called me up to let me know that her peonies are going by, best get over to shoot them. It was a windy day and I took a lot of shots, few of which turned out. This is a very large bloom, close to eight inches across.

Warren, Connecticut. I was sitting here in my bathrobe, reading the postmortem of the big political weekend and I noticed that the morning sun was starting to illuminate the clump of daisies that my wife made me mow around (good thinking Anne). Thinking of Duncan’s flower on the other side of the world, I gathered [...]

Pasadena, California. The Huntington Garden. I found a clump of yellow daisies in the herb garden and there were a few bees working them. This is another bee that seems to be more successful in collecting pollen, or, is really well hung, or both.
