New Preston, Connecticut. Most Saturday mornings I try to get a few shots of my wife Anne warming up before our yoga class. Nothing formal, no one else in the room, just practice for me and she’s a willing, unselfconscious subject. Most of the time I throw these shots out, occasionally I keep a few [...]

Kansas City, Missouri. A year ago I did a photo shoot for my friend (almost a niece*) Emily Darling who owns, runs and teaches at Darling Yoga.
Emily is the real deal: a spectacular yoga teacher and practitioner with an open, warm heart and gentle touch. She really is a special person.
What’s interesting about Emily is [...]

Stretch
New Preston, Connecticut. Anne and I get to yoga class early so we can begin the process of calming down, breathing more steadily, and stretching to better take advantage of the poses and vinyasas our teacher takes us through. Simply lying on one’s back and stretching one’s hamstrings, feet, and toes can do wonders.
Another view [...]

New Preston, Connecticut. Anne and I were getting ready to leave after a great yoga class this morning and our "his and hers" yoga mats were crying out to be photographed. His is the orange one, more tightly wound (like him) and hers is the yellow one, looser and more optimistic. they do best leaning [...]

Kansas City, Missouri. Back in May I was asked by Emily Darling, a well known yogi and yoga teacher (and Anne’s niece from her first marriage) to come to her new studio and do some photography for their web site and for print. We were not after studio shots of poses; we were after "art [...]

Last Friday night we drove up to Northampton, Massachusetts to Smith College to attend a kirtan led by Krishna Das.
I’ve been listening to Krishna Das on and off for five years as part of my wife’s collection of music she uses in her yoga practice. Going to a live kirtan is a totally different experience [...]

New Preston, Connecticut. Our teacher, Anne Hungerford doing camel pose after class. When I try this I can hear "things" moving around in my lower back so I don’t try it often. I always worry that if I could get into this I’d need help to get out.

New Preston, Connecticut. Our teacher, Anne Hungerford doing dolphin pose after class. Downward facing dog on one’s elbows is one way to look at this pose and it’s useful on its own but also as a developmental step for a headstand and other inverted poses.
I’m not sure of the sanskrit name for this pose. Any [...]

New Preston, Connecticut. Our teacher, Anne Hungerford (front) and my wife Anne (back) doing another pose I don’t do (yet). I’m just not open enough in the hips to bend like this but it looks like a pose I want to be able to do as it’s both a nice stretch and an inversion for [...]

New Preston, Connecticut. Our teacher, Anne Hungerford (front) and my wife Anne doing something I can only dream of. However, the more I practice, the closer I get. There’s no end, no ultimate goal except to do it every day, it’s the process that counts.

Torrington, Connecticut. Last night Anne and I went to another kirtan concert (chanting), this time given by WAH!, an excellent bass player, singer and kirtan leader. She was backed up by a harmonium, a drum set and a percussionist.
This was a very different concert from the Snatam Kaur concert we went to recently, although both [...]
