A photographer up on flickr asked me how I get such nice images out of plane windows. Here’s the answer I just gave her:
1. Know the kind of plane you’re flying so you can choose a seat relative to the wing. Generally, these days most of us “plebes” sit in coach which means either over [...]

Flying west to east across Long Island, New York, looking north.
You can see JFK Airport clearly in the center. Our approach took us straight out over the Atlantic, then we took a wide left (northeast) turn, then another left turn to face west and we landed on the far runway. Our approach took us over [...]

Flying west to east looking north just west of the Colorado River in Eastern California.
This image and the two after it were shot in less than a minute. They’re as close as I could come to a panorama from a plane window. The sun was low which created long shadows on the mountains.

Flying west to east looking north in the early morning (low light, east to west). The Colorado River forms the eastern border of California and the western border of Arizona. If you follow the river north (not in view) you find Las Vegas, Nevada, Hoover Dam, and then moving east, The Grand Canyon.
This is Lake [...]

Continuing east from Manhattan one crosses over to Brooklyn and Queens.
The plane was turning a bit and this view is north and slightly east. You can clearly see both the Whitestone and Throgs Neck Bridges and Long Island Sound extends northeast.
As you move up the Sound on the Connecticut side you pass through New Rochelle, [...]

I woke up from a snooze during the initial approach to JFK, popped open the shade and this is what I saw. Scrambled for camera and took a few shots. Not great but good enough for those who are un-initiated.
I highly recommend clicking this image and going up to flickr where you can load a [...]

This is the old TWA terminal at New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport. It’s a spectacular building designed by Eero Saarinen in 1962. The main airport tower is behind it.

It was cloudy enough flying back from Minneapolis so that the only thing to shoot was the clouds. Wish I had a polarizing filter for this stuff. Gonna have to get one now.
The flood lights (halogen?) gave an interesing glow and color to the entire area around United’s Terminal B at O’Hare. I’m pretty sure [...]

There was a nice morning light on these clouds as we turned around and headed east after lifting off from LAX.

That’s me in the center window… seriously. United is working hard to make a come back by making 1/2 of some of their 757s business class with enough legroom to set up a tripod and do studio photography at your seat. Plus, great seats like business class on overseas flights.
This was old miles that I [...]

Broken clouds but a variety of fields in a various stages of production. Grid, roads, houses and all tucked into the pattern nicely.
What interests me about this layout is what it must be like to live and/or work or traverse it. Someday I’m gonna have to drive across again just to see fields like this [...]

Another shot out the right-side of the plane just after we crossed the Colorado River into eastern California. Amazing that these riverbeds show because I doubt there has been water running in them for a long time.

Finally started getting decent shots from a plane again. This is the first good shot I’ve gotten with a DSLR from a plane window. All of my earlier successes were with a Canon G3 and this was shot with a 20D and a 100mm lens. I’m still having focusing problems but moving the focus to [...]

I was struck by the fact that this stream or river (at 38,000′ it can be hard to tell) just ended in the middle of nowhere. Why? Where does it flow? Maybe it’s an old, dead riverbed? Maybe it’s so deep in snow down there that it’s flowing but under snow?

Why do rivers cut beds as they do? They take a path of least resistance and meander around, working with gravity to find their way to the sea but still, the various influences on their paths, over time, is amazing. My guess is that there is a branch of geology that just focusses on river [...]

We were on initial approach into San Jose and this was too good to miss. Somehow the fields here look more like silicon wafers than they do elsewhere. In color if not shape. This landscape reminded me of aerial shots of Vietnam as well. I almost got in trouble having the camera out but I [...]

I wish I knew where this is but when you watch the movie and lose track of time… It’s somewhere between Chicago and San Jose, somewhere in the middle or maybe a tad further west as it’s “wrinkled” and there are more wrinkles in Colorado than Nebraska and Iowa.
