My long time flickr contact and even longer time friend Scott James has a nice set on hummingbirds. I particularly like the one I posted above, the hummingbird through the feeder is great.

Mt. Everett, Massachusetts. I took my wife Anne on a walk around Guilder Pond on the shoulder of Mt. Everett before the mountain laurel went by. I took my Canon 5D and a few lenses because the walk was short. Glad I did, the flowers were in perfect bloom and the light was great. The [...]

Los Angeles, California. I had my now 96 year old mother sit down for yet another one of our portrait sessions. This time I had her face the window and I think she felt more comfortable not staring into the camera. We had a nice visit and we’ll both be a bit sad when I [...]

Huntington Gardens, Pasadena, California. The first flower shot I’ve done in a long time. I love flowers and this one had a marker but stupid me, I forgot to shoot it for reference. So, it’s a milk splash flower until I hear otherwise (because it looks like spilled milk frozen in a photograph to me).

My friend the artist Joy Brown is raffling this “dancing lady” wood-fired ceramic sculpture the proceeds of which are going to tsunami relief in Japan where she grew up. Tickets are $20 and you can send checks to her or, if you’re overseas use paypal to send money. I’m late in posting this notice and [...]

Phuket Breathing // Thailand from artisland on Vimeo. Zoom it out, turn it up… My only criticism / feedback on this is that the images were cut a bit too fast for my brain, I needed a bit longer to saturate my brain with each one. Other than that, wonderful work. Note the camera and [...]

Warren, Connecticut. The snow is almost over but the wind continues to howl outside. These days people make a huge deal out of storms like the one that just hit the East Coast (the Weather Channel effect) but in fact, this storm has lived up to the hype: we have about 20″ of snow on [...]

Warren, Connecticut. I’ve been collecting these Tibetan prayer flags for many years now and our backyard is starting to look a bit like Everest base camp. Our cat, who died a year ago is buried right under them and hopefully the flags and her spirit will keep the rodent population down in the backyard while [...]

Los Angeles, California. I took too long to set up my "traditional" portrait of my 95 and a half year old mother and she got impatient and rather frisky. This is what I get for taking too long.

Los Angeles, California. The Getty Museum Central Garden has some nice flowers in bloom now. My mother can’t see much anymore but I almost always take her through the labyrinth. I think she can still see it in her mind’s eye and that’s enough.

Huntington Gardens, Pasadena, California. Not much in bloom except roses during this visit to the gardens. I’ve never been crazy about rose flowers as photographic subjects but their buds are nice and of course, varicolored rose bokeh works.

Los Angeles, California. Every time I get to the Getty I’m astounded by the architecture. The architect Richard Meier put incredible lines, windows, angles, curves, and textures in almost every view. You look up, down, across and through in almost any place you can get to and there are things of interest to see. Looking [...]

Los Angeles, California. Each time we go to The Getty Center I look down into the garden from above to see what’s in bloom and if it will be worthwhile wheeling my 95 year old mother down there for a look. This past trip we took a spin through the garden because the poppies were [...]

Los Angeles, California. I’m finding it hard to wrap my mind around a 95th birthday but here we are. She put on lipstick for the occasion. Lunch at her favorite place, a run through The Getty Center and dinner at her favorite fish place tonight with her last two living first cousins (80 and 88).

I knew it was just a matter of time before I bought an iPad although I thought it would be a bit more time, like maybe a year so I could get version two. At the same time that I’ve learned about the technical intricacies of computers I’ve gotten the most out of them when [...]

Warren, Connecticut. This was my submission to The New York Times’ A Moment in Time project this morning. We have a pair of mallards that come to our pond to mate each year. This year they’re sharing the pond with a pair of wood ducks as well but today the mallards were here. Just after [...]

Warren, Connecticut. I used to collect these things but then when I lost one to TSA just after 9/11 I stopped. No hard feelings, just can’t always remember to leave these things at home. Note the various one handed knives, the thin French fruit testing knife and the black Kershaw with the Damascus (folded steel) [...]

Warren, Connecticut. I was inspired by Carlo so decided to do a "pocket dump" of things I carry daily. For every "thing" you see here there are numerous others that I bought and tried and put in a drawer because I don’t like them. I have a bunch of watches, a bunch of wallets, numerous [...]
