37 Year old cat: Baby

My friend Linda Potter sent me a news clipping about this cat, which, looks a heck of a lot like our 17 year old cat Kitty. They must share a longevity gene…

Kitty Peeps through the Blur

Warren, Connecticut. Our seventeen year old cat, Kitty spends most of her time hiding these days but every now and then she comes out for a pet and the possibility of a photo op. She was a black cat at one time but has now turned very gray, just like her "parents" and one of [...]

Every now and then Jim Lehrer (The NewsHour) interviews John F. Burns, the New York Times’ Baghdad bureau chief and I look forward to those interviews because Burns is fascinating both to hear and to see. I was surprised and delighted to read this more casual piece of his on cats in Baghdad: What Cats [...]

The Kitty is 17 today

Warren, Connecticut. Our cat, "The Kitty" turned 17 today and given what this cat has been through as a "professional cat" living to 17 is akin to one of us living to 100. Here’s the back story I wrote on The Kitty on her 16th birthday. The Kitty has had arthritis for a few years [...]

Why I have no pens

Warren, Connecticut. Our 16 year old cat somehow made it up onto my desk and found my favorite pen (uni-ball vision elite) and proceeded to bat it around, messing up all of my important papers and walking across the computer’s keyboard a few times. Instead of picking her up and tossing her on the floor [...]

The Kitty on Grass

Warren, Connecticut. Testing out a friend’s Canon 24-70 f/2.8 L. I’ve had and used one before but never on a 5D. Fun. The Kitty was a willing subject. Here she is scent rolling. Posing. Ecstasy.

Loving Look

My wife Anne and I were standing in the doorway of my office, talking when I noticed the cat listening in around the corner. She knew we were talking about her and she looked up at my wife lovingly. I got a glare after taking this picture.

Glassy-Eyed Kitty

Our arthritic cat was soaking up the sun on her stiff back when I distracted her from sleep with my camera. She’s blissfully out of it enough so that she’s not focused on being irritated, just semi-curious.

Cat or raccoon?

Our cat Kitty curled up by the wood stove and when she woke up, well, she looked like this (face full of wood ash). Of course, she jumped up onto the table and took a bath on the new sweater Anne is knitting which will have the added “features” of cat hair and wood ash [...]

I really did not want to take this picture with my 85mm lens but how the heck am I supposed to get at my other lenses to get this shot?

The Kitty is 16 today

Anne’s younger daughter Bonnie was given this cat for her 15th birthday by her then boyfriend. The cat was one of a large litter and the owner was unsure about giving a kitten to a couple of kids. She called Anne who okayed it. That was in May and by June I’d met Anne. That [...]

Lazy Sunday

Anne’s knitting, the Kitty is laying by the woodstove and I’m seeing if I can get back into the swing of taking pictures. Holding this 85mm f/1.2 lens is wearing me out. I think the Kitty’s got the right idea, time for a nap by the stove. The Kitty loved her mouse enough I thought [...]

Lone toy

The Kitty bats these catnip balls around and eventually into the stairwell where they follow gravity’s pull and end up downstairs. It’s a game to see how long they’ll last up here. Somehow this one has remained upstairs for about a week which may be a record.

A place in the sun

Got out of the shower to find the Kitty laying in the sun, warming and hairing up my clothes. Yes, I’m the kind of person who sets his clothes out before going into the shower.

Kitty in the sun

Our 15 year old arthritic cat “Kitty” has a routine to warm her stiff old bones: curl up beside the woodstove in the morning (like now as I write this) then as the sun comes up and my wife Anne goes off to school, sneak up on our bed and stretch out in the sun. [...]

The Kitty’s new toy

Our friend Gary sent The Kitty a holiday gift and she adores it. I’ve never seen her get so worked up with a toy: she takes a few whiffs and hops around the room with it in her mouth, then tosses it over her head and pounces on it and rolls around on the floor [...]

Kitty in snowstorm

The Kitty hates the snow. Her pads got frostbitten one winter when she was lost for six weeks in sub-0 F weather (she’s on her 10th life) and now she doesn’t go out in it. Plus, the cold doesn’t help her arthritis and she seems to know it. Still, she spent the better part of [...]

One down, one to go…

What better than two catnip balls to play with. Except, how to get them both under control? Having just “killed” the two catnip balls, the Kitty rests, keeping an eye on them so they don’t escape.
