North of Great Barrington, MA. On our way to Mt. Greylock yesterday we stopped at this pond to stretch our legs (and pee). It’s a nice place to stop and most morning’s its got a nice haze over it and a nice reflection.

We hiked up on Schaghticoke ridge south of Kent, Connecticut and just on the New York/Connecticut border we found the lower end of a long beaver pond/swamp. We hiked along the eastern edge of it and there were “chews” everywhere where beaver had brought trees down or taken saplings down. We never saw the lodge [...]

Salisbury, Connecticut. Driving north toward the town of Salisbury I noticed that the storm clouds over Bear Mountain lifted and the sun lit it up. Dave in the car ahead of me noticed it too and we both stopped to try to get a shot of it. We used two cars because we hiked from [...]

This small maple was felled directly toward the beaver lodge. No doubt they brought it down for food and a bit of house construction material. The upper part of the small maple with grass and reeds reflected in the pond. Reeds reflected in the beaver pond. The upper right hand corner is a beaver dam [...]

New Preston, Connecticut. We’re incredibly lucky to have this piece of the Steep Rock Preserve right down the road from us with four miles of trails that in winter, are excellent for snowshoeing. Behind Loren and Dave is Lake Waramaug (in the distance).

Paradise Lane, Bear Mountain, Connecticut. After a dry summer we finally had enough rain to fill some streams and knock a lot of leaves down. Colorful leaves under water make for some interesting photography. The water seems to preserve them like amber preserves things that fall into it.

Southwest Massachusetts. Loren and Dave coming up behind me on southwest side of Alander Mountain. Hiking in the Taconic Range is less popular than on the Appalachian trail, just five miles east but that’s a plus: fewer people on the trails. On the left side of this image you can see the ravine we’ve just [...]

West Cornwall, Connecticut. Hiking along the Appalachian Trail with the Housatonic River behind me. This field and these hills are coming to life so fast they seem to have changed colors in just a few days. Of course with the march toward summer comes the march of insects in New England. I guess it’s worth [...]

Freezing the volcano’s lightning This is an excellent piece on how Lucas got some amazing images. It took me a while to nail down the correct exposure. I did a custom white balance off of the lightly clouded sky above the volcano to get the color that you see in this frame. Below is a [...]

Bull’s Bridge to Kent, Connecticut. Dave and I hiked a rugged 7.5 mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail from Bull’s Bridge to Kent. There was 3" to a foot of snow on the ground and it was rough going although it’s one of the most beautiful hikes I’ve done yet. It took us about 5.5 [...]

View from Steep Rock

Washington, Connecticut. Looking down at the Shepaug River from Steep Rock. David, Loren and I did an eight mile hike in Steep Rock the other day just to revisit the place that got us started hiking. Great day, lots of nice scenery and it was quite cold. Still, nothing like today where the high here [...]
