Warren, Connecticut. I’ve been wanting to take some pictures of glassware on our kitchen table in early morning sun for a while and of course I get the urge just when I’m on my way out the door to the airport.

Warren, Connecticut. Every morning a different set of things is left out on my work table and every morning the sun makes an ever-changing pattern of shadows as it shines on them. Sometimes I just sit here, watching the patterns change while sipping coffee and listening to Morning Edition, I’m so mesmerized I don’t think [...]

New York City. The grid of the outer skin of a glass office tower coupled with the warping of some of its glass is reminiscent of David Hockney’s assembled photographs taken at various angles of a single scene. There are enough glass towers with surfaces like this in New York, not to mention multiple angles [...]

New York City. No sooner is a new glass tower finished than another goes up right next door. Each of these structures is an enormous undertaking financially, socially, structurally, logistically, environmentally and yet they are springing up like wildflowers in cities like New York all over the world. I’d love to be a fly on [...]

New York City. This is the building that’s right behind me here and you can see the other building reflected on the right side of this one.
An interesting aspect of large glass buildings in tight surroundings is how they interact visually and spatially with the buildings around them as well as the sky. In order [...]

New York City. A wide angle lens allowed me to pull in not only the glass tower thrusting toward the cloudscape but also the buildings directly around me in the tight canyon that is a side street in Manhattan.
Another view of the same image.
This was shot in the same series as the one above [...]

New York City. Walking down Lexington we came upon this faceted building. It was crying out to be photographed and I obliged.

New York City. The new Apple store on 5th Avenue is underground and its entrance is a glass cube that sits right on front of the monolithic General Motors building. The photographic possibilities of shooting a reflection and through the cube in the same image were too good to resist. Great blue sky with nice [...]

New York City. The sky was so blue and full of white, puffy clouds yesterday that it begged to be photographed. Problem was, we were in the deep canyons of mid-town Manhattan. What to do? Shoot the sky’s reflection off a build or two. Works for me.

I had just exited the subway on my way to another train north toward home when I noticed that the main room at Grand Central Station looked darker than usual, almost sepia and that sepia light was reflecting on the marble countertop. This reminded me that my parents and their parents probably stood at this [...]

Walking past the famous Booth Theater on 45th Street, just off Broadway I noticed a reflection of the marquee in a bus parked right in front of it. We were on our way to see Avenue Q but Faith Healer looks like a winner as well. Ralph Fiennes and Cherry Jones are incredible actors.

Mid-town Manhattan is full of glass box office buildings that provide numerous opportunities for these types of optical illusions. The illusions and grid patterns make fascinating images.

Once you see the possibilities of using window grids and reflections, almost any block in mid-town Manhattan provides interesting possibilities.

I’m standing on the corner of 42nd St. and Avenue of the Americas just inside Bryant Park, looking uptown through the “canyon” with the Empire State Building reflection on the side of one of its walls. Combine glass building surfaces and close proximity and you get fascinating views, uptown, downtown, and both simultaneously.

Standing on the island in the middle of Times Square (New York) I caught a glimpse of Anne reflected in Bill’s sunglasses. I took the shot quickly before Bill could complain and didn’t notice the mother dragging her reluctant son behind Anne. You can see an ad for Avenue Q, the play we had just [...]

Walking across town I came across a very nice Harley with a chromed “German-shaped” helmet tied to the back. The city (and me) reflected in the helmet was too good to resist.

This was the first shot I took after meeting up with Aaron and Janel in New York. We were walking across town from Grand Central Station and this just had to be tried. I’ll bet New York is full of this stuff, one could do a series.

Liquid Sculpture is Martin Waugh’s collection of high speed, flash photography of liquid frozen in motion: droplets, splashes, and more. There are many waterdrops caught up on flickr but Martin’s stuff is from another world.

Every morning I make coffee for Anne and me, feed the cat, start a fire in the wood stove and if it’s cold I sit right where I’m sitting now (near the stove) and look at email on this PowerBook in my lap.
As the sun comes up it beams through various front windows of the [...]

This little bottle of scent has been sitting on the bureau and I’ve been meaning to attempt a photograph.
By the way, I learned that oil is really oily (duh) and after touching this vial my keyboard now smells rather musky. The good part is that I have a bit of Anne on my keyboard for [...]
